Capstan Winch on an early 80?

OK, so here's my question / thought for today.

When I finally get around to getting my early 80, I'd really quite like it to have a Capstan winch on it - I just like the look of it.

(Perhaps interestingly Im not at all bothered about a rear PTO.)

My question today relates to springs, ride heights and front axle travel / articultaion if you will.

I know there isnt a country mile of distance between bump stops and axle without the winch installed, so when people fit the Capstan's does the front end droop with the extra weight (like it would with a bar and modern winch on say a Defender)? If so, do people get the springs reset, live with it or something else?

I understand only the very early 48's had the springs with 2.5" camber and late 48 onwrds had 3.5" camber which presumably raised the front end an inch or so?


So, long story short... Whats the effect of putting a Capstan on a 48 / 49 80"? Out or nowt?

Hi Jon

They used to fit a extra leaf in the spring packs of the S1 with capstan winches.

While a capstan is shown on the very early brochures for Land Rover, particularly the centre steer drawing, the capstans didn't actually arrive as an option till about 1950. In fact the mounting plate for the S1 capstan winches has to be knotched to fit on the front of a 1948 model.

While there are differences if you can acquire any of the Aeroparts winches fitted to Series 1 or a Series 2/2a with a 2 1/4 engine (with the engine dog clutch mechanism) it can be adapted to fit. Talk to Bob or me about the process and parts.

Its an early one as it has the 4 drain grooves from the bollard. I cant see the drive gear but hopefully it would be the early one too.
Later winches only had 2 grooves.
Early drives had the holes on the crank plate and the pins on the sliding drive flange.
Bit dear for me though.

The engine dog clutch looks to be the later type, the brackets are certainly the ones for the 2 1/4 litre engine.

I also think the mounting plate doesn't have the rear fold.

Neither of these issues will cause too much problem.

My guess would be when the 88"/109" Series 1 was introduced and the front cross member was moved forward about an inch and the longer bonnet is fitted. The later Aeroparts alloy winch body (AEH.D.xxxx) is docked off parallel front and rear (rather than the curve of the earlier version AEH.V.xxxx) and its mounting plate is correspondingly shorter. The chassis dumbirons for attachment of the bumper bar are the same as 86"/107" - there is less room for the winch so it was shortened up. There may be other AEH. versions - be interested to see anything posted here of other identifiers.

Ok,will try and get a pic of one that i know of that is on a '56 S1.Trying to work out if it is the original that was on the vehicle from new.

The 64,000.00 dollar question is - is the perimeter of the casting curved in a continuous shape? or does it have parallel front and rear faces? If it is continuously curved and this is an intermediate (as AEH.P xx ) and a very early number at that too with only two drains like the AEH.V series.

I brought two of the AEH.V ones inside to compare with your photo but am not certain as the roller and grille are obscuring the winch body and I no longer have an AEH.D unit.
