View Full Version : Water in footwells, steam from air vents

The front footwell carpets are soaked. the backs of the rubber mats indicate the water is clear. and there is steam coming from the air vents on the dash.

Have looked inside the engine bay, checked the window seals, looked under the vehicle, all seems dry. No sign internally of water dripping through the dash onto the floor, glove box etc all dry.

I don't not have a sun roof.

Is this indicating an aircon failure....all I can think of.

Interested to hear from anyone with a similar experience or who can cast some light on this problem.

Thanks.

I think there is also something about this in the disco uk forum about the drains behind the a pillar trim the covers the windscreen. They have a bulletin in regards to retiming the drain so it does not block up. Have a look on disco uk form using search engine!

Good luck

Assuming you're talking a D3, there is a technical bulletin - LA-501-006.

[Edit] Got beaten to it!

Checked the Disco UK site and looked at the TB - most likely is an A-pillar water leak problem so will get the kit from LR and try that first.

Thanks for the quick replies!

BTW, 2006 TDV6 S - will have to update profile info.

Check the AC drain tubes also, they are either side of the transmission tunnel, you can see them if looking under the car either side of the gearbox, sometimes they are kinked or blocked and the AC drains back into the footwell.

Also there have been cases where there has been a crack in the weld(There's a thread on Disco3.UK) or the seal between the welds on the firewall are faulty and when it rains it leaks in behind the dash, which was our problem.

Also check your Sunroof drains if you have them.

Thanks - spent about half an hour under the car today looking for the AC drain tubes. Looked either side of the tunnel and up as far as I could go with a torch but nothing there that looked like a drain tube. The car is up for a service next week so I might get the problem looked at then. Will have another go this weekend to see if they have been dislodged or bumped and moved as a result. Maybe broken off ?? I did find the drainage channels in the rear of each of the front wheel arches was clogged with debris and cleaned that out so that's one job done.

Well, the AC drains pipes were blocked. An air pressure hose has cleaned them out however....I'm still getting cold steam vapour coming out of the 2 air vents in the centre of the dash - not out of the ones near the doors. The workshop said maybe the condensor is on its way out but that's their "best guess"

Water leakage into footwells has now increased and on the drivers side the water is hot - but no noticeable loss of coolant....still searching.

Very odd if it is hot.
I would suggest having a look at the pollen filter to see if it is wet. Water can enter over the lip under the scuttle.

steam? Steampunk maybe?

Definitely not steampunk - although my kids were quite excited when I mentioned it to them.....

Water has now made its way to the back passenger door and drips out from the bottom of the door opened. Must be the A pillar problem that was the subject of a LR Technical Bulletin. The water is clear and there's plenty of it, it must have built up below the windscreen.

Lowered the glove box and inspected the pollen filter - dry as a bone.

Booked in with the dealer for a proper examination/fix as I can't do much more now.

Thanks all for your comments.

Have you just purchased the vehicle?

Has the vehicle had a new windscreen fitted?

The bulletin in question is pretty easy, just a quick look where instructed will be able to she'd some light, the fix is very easy.

All th best.

Not a recent purchase, have owned this one for a few years and the windscreen is original. Good to hear the fix is simple, I am not great on the tools, still learning, now on my 3rd LR over 20 years.
