With only 4,000km on my new Double Cardin front shaft the Cardin joint has failed......
I am currently at Coffs Harbour heading to the Gold Coast and Brisbane tomorrow. I am going to drop the shaft out in the morning but now I am back on stock height springs I am looking for a stock shaft in good condition along the way that someone might be good enough to loan/sell me. Alternatively any ideas on a retailer/wrecker that I might be able to buy one from.
Challenge might be that I have a D2 flange in, given I am not sure how to change the flange some help is also required.
I just don't feel comfortable doing the next 1400km home on just the rear with centre difflock.
Cheers
Iain
P.s. Wayne (Lowranger) now is a great opportunity to tell me how great your tom woods is......!!! :D

Just got of the UK Defender forum and believe it or not there is a similar post.
The guys in the UK have driven some long distances with the front prop out.
Have a look at that forum,if you can,t get it fixed they had some driving tips (ie with the prop out).
Cheers and good luck.

Worst case, if you can get it there from Sydney, you can have mine with the Flange as a loan.

Try Coffs Harbour 4WD Centre - Ph: 6653 1800
They have a great interest in Land Rovers and may be able to help out.
Failing that, MR Automotive in Brisbane area seem to have a good reputation with many AULROians.

Do me a favour, and buy a bloody Woods shaft,as I get quite depressed when I read about all these shaft failures, where there is such an easy fix:D
You could buy a couple of Woods shafts and carry a couple of spares for what you have spent on other shafts. Not that you would need to replace one of Toms shafts ;)

Just lock the centre diff and drop the front prop shaft.
People have been doing that since the Rangie was first released, let alone Stage Ones, 110's, etc.

Put it this way Iain, a mate drove his 4BD1 powered 110 for weeks on the front shaft and diff when he wrecked a rear uni.
(its amazing what happens to needle rollers when you don't pump grease into them for several years....)

Do I need to remove the four bolts at the tc end or are they ok to have the nuts back on and just stay as I can't get them out without removing a split ring.
steveG
16th March 2013, 07:45 AM
Put the nuts back on and then put a cable tie around the four of them between nuts and flange and tighten it to stop them rattling around.

I had a front uni fail in outback NT,no grease even though it was dealer serviced three weeks earlier and I drove for a day and a bit with cable tie's holding the bolts in place. The Alice dealership replaced the whole drive shaft no question and checked over the whole vehicle for me,the Tdi had no trouble spinning the rear wheels either. Hi Iain
Sorry to hear that the props gone.
Two thoughts
You said you had a series 2 Discovery flange on the front tc. Given the diff end is so similar and Discoveries have a cardan joint could you just use the Discovery shaft if one is available.
Secondly, Iwould not be too worried about driving on the one diff with the centre lock engaged. I did this for around 3 weeks with a broken rear diff in a range rover and have driven the discovery home from a hard weekends play on the front diff towing a camper. It is ordinary as the backlash in the gearing is excentuated. Just take it steady and easy on the gear changes.

Thanks everyone I pulled the shaft out this morning and 400km on it hasn't missed a beat. A little more backlash but driven carefully its fine.

Thanks Cal I am back in Sydney now, just rang the supplier to try and get a refund as I contacted him when Drovers died and he flat out refused despite his assurances that his workmanship and quality was second to none and drovers was the first failure he had had. Two shafts failing within 4,000km of new is not good product in anyones book.
Waste of a significant amount of money that.......
I would have got a Tom woods Wayne but I was stuck in the middle of the country at the time.....

Iain
If you are going to put the standard front shaft back in,I suggest that you check the shaft at full articulation, and check that the standard uni's aren't going to bind.As I suspect that even though you are back at standard height, you have longer shocks allowing more travel?
