Hi Guys,

I posted a little while ago re buying advice for a Discovery. I have recently purchased a Td5 Discovery 2 2000 model. Really happy with it and thanks for all the advice on getting one.

I am wondering about one little noise it makes sometimes. It usually happens going uphill and seems to be connected to acceleration. What happens is I can be going up hill and will go over a bump (pot hole or speed bump will do it) and I get quite a loud noise, sounds like it is coming from under the car (front) or low down in the engine. Every time it happens I back off the accelerator straight away, it stops and I keep driving. I don't know if it's my imagination but I think I can feel it through the accelerator pedal.
This doesn't happen every time I go over bumps, probably only occurred 4 or 5 times in the 3 weeks I have had the car.

Anyone had any similar issues?

I will post some pics asap.

Just getting to know the forum so sorry if this is in the wrong place.

Shaun.

Feeling through the pedal is probably just transmitted through the body/chassis as the cable won't really send too much. I'd first check the engine mounts and exhaust system. Probably the most basic area to look at first.

From there check shock rubbers and suspension (start at panhard rod) bushes.

Does it have ACE?

Does the TC light on the dash board come on too?

If so ... 'tis normal. Just the ABS/Traction Control doin' it's thang.

Welcome to the exciting world of Land Rover ownership.

Have to agree with that, my TC light & grumbling noise comes on when I drive too fast up a pot holed road. Not sure if that is cosher, or not , Bob

Will have to check the tc light but I don't think it does come on.
What would I be checking for in the exhaust?

Also I don't think it has ACE, wasn't mentioned by the previous owner so I am guessing it doesn't have it

If the power steering reservoir has two caps then it has ACE.

The reservoir is on the left hand side of the car behind the air filter.

One cap means no ACE.

My money would be on the Traction Control kicking in....as Disco Emu says, look for the orange TC light on the left hand side of the dash lighting up....I can easily get mine to kick in if I give it a boot full on less than perfect tarmac etc.

What cable? D2 is fly by wire :):)

But as clubagreenie says, could be engine mounts or exhaust. There is a well known problem with the exhaust (the flex joint I think??), the engine mounts are apparently collapsed on my '01 and I don't get a knock. It just idles a little more roughly than the '99.

How about trans mount?

Do you feel it through the steering wheel too, or just through the body?
Cheers
Mike

It's a td5 isn't it. FBW then, means even less chance of vibes.

I only have a v8 for reference.

What does the noise sound like?, TC sounds like a muffled machine gun and can be felt throught the brake pedal as it pulses.
If it is more of a knocking/clicking or mechanical sounding noise further investigation is needed.

could be as simple as the front suspension hitting the bump stops - mine used to do that all the time until I put the lift in - the springs had sagged & I only had 45mm of travel until it hit
Hope you work it out & its something simple:)

Yes it's a Td5.

The noise sounds like an engine revving really high, but the engine is revving normal and the noise is separate. More like a unit separate to the engine is kicking in and making a lot of noise. It's definitely not a knocking sound.

I think I will just have to keep my eye in it and see if it happens more frequent

Thanks for all the replies
