I know many on here have done Cape York.

We are heading up their in June and I will be the only one in the group with a Petrol vehicle. I only have the standard tank although I do have 65 litres of LPG as well.

Just wondering if anyone can tell me whether I will need to carry extra fuel on any legs. We will be travelling OTT on way up and back.

Thanks,
Adam

No the cape is not remote like say the Tanami. You can buy petrol at any of the roadhouses like Bramwell Junction, Coen, Bamaga, Weipa, etc.
I don't know about LPG though.

However , You will pay for the privilege.

Thanks. I was expecting to pay big.

I wasn't expecting to get LPG beyond Cairns but I will keep the tank in reserve for "just in case". That's great if I don't have to carry any Jerry's.

The last Auto LPG location heading north is in Cooktown.
Enjoy your trip.

Coles Express Mareeba is probably the furtherest North if you go directly up the Cooktown road to the Development Road turn off. The Palmer River roadhouse is a good place to top up petrol, and so is Coen , at the Sexchange Hotel.

I thought that would get a response.
The RACQ agent in Coen runs a mini supermarket, the petrol station and the was "Exchange" sign on roof now "Sexchange" hotel.

When I pulled in for petrol he was cleaning up 40-50 litres of diesel in the gutter. Someone had holed their tank on the road and kept on a pumping.

Two blokes came in with Mk3s made into campers just as I was leaving . I didn't get photos but strange I have never seen photos or info on them here seeing the interest in army stuff.

I found him a nice guy whose main RACQ income was fixing broken camper trailers , and he had a new cruiser diesel there that needed $15k worth of work on the injection.
I found it sometimes better where possible to drive in the graded gutters in the few places that they existed, and the Weipa Woolies truck was down to about 10Kmh in some parts. Now that is a corrugated road.

And do not be tempted to think, " Nah, I wont stop here, its only --- K's to the next fuel" Fill up at every servo! It not only keeps your fuel tank full for the unexpected, but gives ya a break from the corros :D

The only part you may have an issue would be if you were heading to Nomanton on your way back home, the distance from Musgrave or Hahn River roadhouses is quite long.
