Usual issues of BECM integration + adaption to ZF automatic... plus in standard form it's about 60 Nm and 40kw short in torque and power respectively compared to the 4.6 V8. I did wonder about a chipped Td5 which it seems could be brought closer to the V8 re. power and torque... but ultimately similar issues to the Puma engine. The Td5 however might be easier because of its use in Disco production....

well td5 or puma pose simlur but slightly diffrent problems bolting up to the P38 gearbox. while defenders owners who wanted a auto in a TD5 this was easy, just pinch every thing from a disco. but a puma driver? pinch one from a Transit Van, sorry no auto with a puma, bolt it to the 4.6 P38 box, ( NB not the 4.0) seems the poms hae sorted that out, Kit 1K about.

BECM seems simple plenty of peaple hae sorted this.

the reason for asking or thinking about the puma is simply the 300 is a bit old and pricy to rebuld. the TD5 is more so, and you can pick up a puma with loom etc for about 4K

how much more power is chiping a puma getting. and do you need as much power as a 4.6 in the first place??

Fair point.. I guess it's not so much max torque but where the "useable" torque comes in the rev range. I rarely drive my P38 at more than 3500rpm - in any gear  If I could get sufficient torque around 1800-2300 rpm to maintain top gear on long grades on the highway I'd be happy chappy:D. On some of the grades on the Pacific Hwy for instance between Bris and sydney or the New England Hwy, if I exceed the open road limit by a few kph and keep the rpm around 2700, it literally sails over the steeper grades in top gear. Drop back to 2300 rpm and it's panting and dropping back to 3rd... I have wondered about a turbo diesel transplant and was interested in retaining the 4HP24 auto but possibly transplanting a TDV6 using the UK kit available... but it worked out horrendously expensive...

I think a 2.7 or 3.0td v6 would be a better matched engine for the P38. I'm a bit of a rev head at heart and couldn't fathom the idea of nearly 2.5t being pulled around by 110kW and 360Nm... As much as I never use all of my 4.6's 415-odd Nm, I still like the idea of having it there. Especially on those trips where you load the big girl up - probably on the higher side of 3t...

That said, the fuel consumption would bring a smile! Don't mind the Puma's bottom end pull either... There are people in the UK making 250hp out of 2.4l Pumas... Now to find the link...

Here's one putting out about 180hp...

I did hear whisper of a 450hp puma but can't find the website that I saw it on...
