I went out and bought 16 wheels because of the greater availability of LT/ AT tyres and lesser cost for my new/old 2002 TD5
I also took note of the comments about the lock stops being able to be changed .
However when I looked closely at the wheels which are "Lightning" mags from a 38A, they have the same backspacing as the 18s and are 8 inches wide. Are all the D2 wheels the same backspacing and width? I guess I will be able to adjust the lockstops as the curve of the tyre will be a bit different.

This prevents /discourages one from putting on common LT tyre sizes like 245.70x16 , although BFG state that a 245.75x16 will fit a 8 inch rim, there are a couple of 255.70x16 tyres around like Bridgestone D694 LT and BFG LT/ATs from the USA. These are closer to the normal rolling diameter of a 255.65x16 than a 245.75x16 is. I had 245.75x16s on my Range rover but when towing I felt they increased the gearing a bit much

Has anyone had experience with this and suggest what they consider a good compromise between size and gearing.

I'm going thru the same as you. My HSE has the 255/55/R18 and I want to get 16's to be able to buy A/T tyres without selling a kidney.

I already did the steering stop change last week. BEST THING EVER! My D2a is a different car now. I didn't use any washers and they don't rub at lock at all, even at articulation off road.

So I'm planning to put 245/70/R16s on it next.

What state are you in?

I am about to advertise a set of 5 - P38 alloy rims with 265/75-16 Goodyear MTR's. Tyres are all still roadworthy and have about 50% tread left. Rims are in good condition. I am in Melbourne.

If anyones interested let me know. Also have a set of 18x8 Disco 2 alloys with 255/60-18 Goodyear highway tyres in excellent condition.

I have bought new Zu rims with 33" tyres on them

Has anyone actually cut the stops and knows how much to cut off?

I guess I will have to just wing it when the time comes.

I must say I was surprised that the 16 inch rims were 8 inches wide with about 7 inch backspace. This precludes an "ordinary" sizes like 245.70 or 235.70 etc. as the rims are too wide , according to BFG anyway and what I had in the back of my mind 215.85..

Ah well back to the drawing board.
Its not immediate anyway, as I will have to sell the RRC before I have the money for new tyres, and another 16 inch rim.

OK found the answer.

Approx 1mm of adjustment will increase / decrease the turning circle buy 9.8"
's

You can fit shorter steering stops to a D2 that has 16" wheels from
the factory, the vehicles with 18" wheels have longer lock stops fitted to
accomodate the wider tyres.

The stops are either 23mm (short) or 29mm
(long). Just measure them and see what you have, "some" 16" D2's left the
factory with 29mm Lockstops and you can safely fit the shorter ones making the
turning circle LOADS better, adjustments can be made to either by adding 1mm
washers behind the spacers as some vehicles may require 25mm stops for example
to stop the tyres rubbing the radius arms on full lock.

Mine came with 16" rims. I run 285/75-16 tyres and have 1 washer behind the standard steering stops. The tyres just ever so slightly touch the radius arm on one side if the wheel is turned hard.

Can someone end my confusion. What is the largest A/T tyre you can fit to an 04 Disco2A with std height suspension. Everyone I ask has a different answer.
Cheers :p

In diameter: 235 85 16

In width: 255 70 16 ( some people go bigger though I believe )

A good compromise for std height and std gearing is 245 75 16., LT rated of course.
