leaking roof

hi everyone just joined up , been browsing all the posts , great info available . I have a 96 build 300tdi waggon based in Eaglehawk Neck Tas.Brought the landy in 97 with 30000k on it from the army,havent had any dramas , done 8 trips to the gulf and nw Aussie in it and countless west coast Tassie sojourns.The poor old girl has sat around idle for the last couple of years but I am tidying her up for another trip north in July - bail from the Tassie winter.
I have a wierd leak in the roof,water poors in from under the roof lining above the drivers door when the nose is downhill,if the nose is up in the rain - no leak but drive off and point downhill and in pours the water. Im wondering if water could be running out of the roof gutter drain hole at the back of the gutter and somehow running back into the roof cavity through the seal b/w roof and the back side pannel ,staying at the back till I head downhill thenruns forward.Not sure what is in the roof and dont really want to pull lining off unless I really have to.I know of one other case of this -also baffeling the owner.
Anyone got any ideas , it is not an issue up north in winter but it really sucks down here as it is starting to rain a bit now .

I had this problem years ago with one of my series 2A vehicles. Took the easy way out and filled the inside channel with epoxy resin. Fixed the problem well. Jim

I had the same leak symptoms with my 1999 110 Wagon.
In my case I removed the headlining to see what was happening.

The water was entering through the join of the roof panels.
i.e. where the rounded corner panel (with the alpine windows) joins the flat roof section.

The water ran inside the rounded panel and flowed down to the internal channel where the roof bolts to the sides of the vehicle.
Once in the channel the water would either collect if the vehicle was facing uphill or run forward if the vehicle was facing downhill.

I sealed all the joins internally with Sikaflex.
If you are reluctant to remove the headlining you could try sealing the joins externally. Not as neat, however no-one really looks up there.

Of course your leak may be from another source.

I have exactly the same leak and year model car. I've sealed absolutely everything with sikaflex 221 and was convinced it was the gutter sealant. The vertical flange on the internal gutter stops about 50mm from the top front corner of the door so when the car points downhill it pours out there. I'll bet my left one its your alpine window seals

Hey mr occy, it's boost from across the bay, I have plenty of Sika at my place, and I just sealed up our defender a few weeks ago. More than happy to come over and seal yours up one night after work. Cheers Bob.

Hi boost I actually did get the Sikka out last night but maybe u could come and see if I missed anywhere before it rains. Ill be home about 5 tonight or Thurs be around all day , then in town

Thanks to all who have had input. I also got a call from the people at F.W.D. .com who said it is a common prob. and the rivits in the roof work loose and the water comes in the roof skin joins ,I have had the Sikka out and it is going to **** down here in the next few days so I will let u know how it goes.

I'm having the same issue with my 2011 - 130 Going to see what the dealer can find when it goes back in for a few other body bits..

I have sikked[ is that a word?] up all the joints I could find - havent done the alpines yet, the leak is still there a little bit -no where near as bad. I am going to redo what I have done and see if I missed a bit.
