Hi
The 2010 110 Crew Cab Defender is not the easiest machine to view what's going behind you - both reverse and on the road. Ideally I'm after a ccd - ? sony. Now a few questions:

where is the best position, configuration to mount a camera on crew cab ute? Pics?
I'd like to be able to see what's going on behind me whilst driving, so can I rig a camera up so as it works in forward motion...
seeing as you can't see through the vinyl awning of the ute cover, do I 1. mount a small screen where rear view mirror normally is?, 2. get a navman type screen and wire it into that, 3. utilise a rear view mirrow type setup? Pros-cons.
Are there screens that could be dimmed for night driving?

Thanks

Draw on this photo to show me where to mount the camera? (I'd like to stick it under the number plate light if there was a unit discreet enough for that - suggestions?)

Hi 29dino, great idea. You can power them up from a switch in the cab so that they work as you drive along.I used an illuminated switch so that I knew it was on and didn't forget to turn it off. My camera is quite small and was easy to mount discreetly. However, they need to be mounted away from the number plate light as they can get washed out by the glare. Some are cordless and use a small transmitter but I believe these still need a power supply which is normally taken from the reversing light wire and therefore can't work while you are moving forward. At night, mine is overpowered by headlights from behind so it is not as useful as you may think. I tow a lot so found it great to be able to check on the trailer as I was driving. The other issue is where to mount the screen. Some screens are designed to clip on the rear view mirror but I placed mine down on the dashboard where it is less in the way. Hope this is helpful. Cheers, 130man.

I mounted mine in the hole on the rear x member, that way its much easier to line up a trailer, I notice you dont have a towbar as yet, but will be so handy when you do.

I got a cheap (but with IR illumination etc) one off ebay from China. Comes with a hole saw and everything and is flush fit. Would work under the number plate where you describe. Cost... not much.

You cannot legally remove / cover a rear vision mirror.

goingbuxh - what camera is that? I need to find a good one( and place to mount for the disco 1)

mine is an EONON waterproof camera,

something like this
A0119 in Car Wide Angel Waterproof CMD Reversing Parking Color Camera Guard Line | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/A0119-in-Car-Wide-Angel-Waterproof-CMD-Reversing-Parking-Color-Camera-Guard-Line-/290822412906?pt=AU_Video_Cameras&hash=item43b65dda6a&_uhb=1#ht_8300wt_1028)

ive tried a few listed as waterproof but so far the 2 eonon cameras ive bought have actually been waterproof - tho I try not to hit them with a pressure washer. Have one on the car and one on the van.

the illumination from tail lights / reverse light at night is all you need.

Hi,
I've got a cheapie camera that came with the gps unit. Its resolution is not brilliant, neither is the screen, so I may upgrade soon.
However to answer your question on how I did it on my vehicle (single cab 130 puma)
Across the back above the rear cross member is a length of angle iron. By going up through the holes in the cross member with a 13mm socket you can loosen the bolts that hold it in place. Then push the cheapie tin mounting plate in the crack and re-tighten the bolts.
I have powered the camera off a switch in the cab so I can see who/what is on my tail.
I ran the wires through the chassis member from the rear most hole to one just forward of the battery box on the LH side.

cheers

I have an Eonon as well (slightly different model) and a single DIN philips unit with screen. The camera is mounted in the same location as goingbush and I find that it all works well and I dont have the additional screen to worry about.

It wouldn't be hard to wire in a switch so you could see behind you whilst driving forward you would just have to put it in line with the reverse signal input into the stereo unit.

I have one of these with a dedicated 5" screen mounted on the windscreen above the rear vision mirror. Expensive but good. It is wired to a switch rather than the reversing light so that I can use it as a rear vision mirror when I can't see out the rear window due to all the camping gear. The button allows you to switch between different viewing angles. The camera is mounted above the rear door.

Bar is on it's way. Picked up a second hand one. Interesting place to put the camera. Thanks.

Have just purchased a Jaycar ccd model to stick in the pto hole and a small screen. Should do the job. Where's the best place to pick up some power for screen and camera? I'll run it full time I think and put in override switch.

rvr110 presume you need a different cameraq for the overhead and corner views shonin the video.

It's all done with just one camera. You just push the button to cycle through the different views.

Like the idea here of mounting a camera in this recess in the cross member
for anyone who has done this is there any impairment on the vision given the camera sirs in a recess

Have ordered the components I think I need to install a reversing camera in 110
while I await their arrival am thinking how I do this

plan to fit camera and supply power to camera fron reversing light on defender
(so camera and ?? Monitor switches on when I select reverse ...this power source is
close to camera and easy to access

then plan to connect a video cable fron camera to monitor in the front

QUESTION

Does the monitor need its own power source and if so where is it best to get this from that will not upset the switching on when I select reverse ?

or am I confused ...

Hi,
I got my 2 cameras and monitor from Safety Dave. Both cameras are powered from the monitor.
I ran the power from the reverse lights up the chassis rail, up through a hole under the cubby box, through pin 1 and out the common of a 2 way switch, up under the transmission covering mat to the windscreen.
Pin 2 of the switch is accessories power so I can use it for rear view with the camper on the tray.
The second camera is in the rear window of the camper to give a higher view to the back. Cameras are switched by the monitor controls.
Cheers

Thanks for that
I’m still confused
i have a simple set up with one rear camera and one monitor
so do I need power to the camera AND the monitor
as stated I can easily get power from the rear light and use reverse gear to switch on
.....but confused if I need to wire up both camera and monitor and both to reverse light

Or as you appear to be saying I wire MONITOR to reverse light .....and then bring power back to the CAMERA fron the monitor

Check your wiring diagram.
Of the four that I have installed all were designed to be powered by the reverse light, so the power tap on the wiring loom is at the camera end.
Power is sent to the screen thru the cable that connects the screen to the camera.

If you've got a "wireless" set up, then you probably will have to power the camera and screen separately.

Cheers Glen

Hi,
Yep, reverse light power forward to monitor then power goes back to the camera (s) down the multi - core connecting cable supplied.
That is how mine is wired and it is the only experience I have had with them.
Cheers

Hi,
A few snaps of the screen mounting in the Defender. I wasn't happy with the bulky suction-cap mount, and as the monitor had a thread in the bottom, I made a bracket to suit. This keeps the monitor as low as possible and is rock solid.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/417.jpg
The mount is quite simple and sits under the existing torx screw

A nut locks the thread tight at the desired angle.

Cheers
