Hi, I have a 2003 D2a update TD5 Auto.
Problem I have is that the LCD display (ODO and TRIP) is not showing which gear has been selected. Checked with Nanocom and no faults are showing. Vehicle drives normally. Also the mode button is not displaying on the dash.
Have searched Aulro and google but nothing comes up except the WXYZ switch on the side of the Auto transmission. This also checks out ok with the Nanocom.
Any ideas of why this is occurring.

Is it a recent behavior or has this always happened?
The BCU controls most of the instrument displays. Have a look at the transmission type setting in the BCU and make sure is set to automatic. If its set to manual the gear selected doesn't display. Id guess it will disable the m&s lights as well.
It might well be something else but worth checking this first.
Cheers

Agree, press the "sport" button and see if the lights work. Are the lights around the gear selector (green background lights and red indication lights). If not lift the surround and check the plug underneath. Also check the plug on the xyz switch on the LH side of the gearbox.

Only had the vehicle a couple of weeks. Display worked until today. Checked the WXYZ plug on the side of the transmission, unplugged, cleaned with electrical contact cleaner and replugged. Checked with Nanocom and WXYZ selector shows correct outputs.
Red indicator lights on the selector work ok.
Green background lights are working.
...
All fixed. Checked BCU with Nanocom and it showed the vehicle was manual petrol. Changed to Diesel Auto. Restarted and all is good. Thank you for the info.:)

Think I found the original cause of the fault.
Positive battery terminal was loose. I think this may have caused a corruption in the BCU. Checking faults also showed a throttle position error? Reset this and all is well again.

Low battery voltage, or perceived (by way of loose terminal) often shows up as M&S lights flashing. While you may not have had this symptom it may be related. But to change a setting like that is a pretty specific thing to do either manually or by way or corruption.
But it could be the start of revenge for the war being Bosch vs Land Rover. But on that basis Lucas would have had to be owned by the Reich.

I had a similar occurance twice in 12 months, if a dont lock the D2 with the remote as I park it in a locked garage and leave it unlocked.
Even unlocked the immobiliser will arm and the red dash light will blink after 30 secs or so.
When I open the door and insert key and turn the engine will start but I get the m&s lights and D flashing sometimes, to clear the fault lock the car with remote and restart all is ok again.
It's like the immoboliser system and ecu does wake up the bcu?
Thanks

I'm surprised that the BCU memory wiped due to a loose terminal. The settings are retained even when the unit is removed from the vehicle. So they should be retained even with dodgy power supply.
The OP had no m&s or gear indicator showing at all. The normal solutions for flashing m&s arent really applicable, it's a different issue altogether. ;)

This sounds more like a key issue. If I use the spare key (a cut key and fob just for the buttons) and don't start it immediately then the immobiliser will reset and I need to either swipe the fob up near the ring around the barrel or press the unlock button again. This adjusts the flash pattern of the LED and it will start. If it's not reset then it'll turn over but not start.

I haven't seen the M&S lights flashing. Symptom I was seeing was no gear selection display on the dash and no M&S light displaying.
I did program a new key the day before, but this display anomaly didn't appear until a couple of days later. Loose battery terminal being the cause was purely a guess on my part. I have now tightened the positive terminal and will see what happens.

This is probably the "passive immobilization" which can be turned of with nanocom or hawkeye, if you don't like it. It's supposed to be off by default on discos over here, but was turned on by accident on a few and they had to release a TSB for it. I guess in Australia is turned on by default.

I've not seen the BCU have it's memory wiped (though it might be nice on occasion), but recently someone posted where the ECM lost it's security code sync from the BCU. The code it gave suggested a new ECM had been fitted... it shouldn't really be possible to get the ECM to go back to new status as far as I know... at least not with normal diagnostic tools.

Your problem (although it looks to now be resolved) is a carbon copy of what I had around 6 months back.
I didn't start a new thread but IIRC I tacked my query onto another "Auto transmission problem thread". I don't recall getting too many replies and I put that down to it being a rare occurrence. Even some of the international/UK/US forums were searched without success.
I had no issues with the performance of the transmission (except for what I believe is a sticking/not 100% functional shift solenoid on the upshift from 2nd to 3rd).
I put a new battery in as the old one was getting on in years. It performed marginally when load tested. I realise now that running my fridge off it for hours when parked may have shortened its lifespan. I would park it up after a long drive for a couple of hours and leave the fridge on with its low voltage cut-out set to 11.5 volts IIRC. There was enough charge to get the vehicle started no worries but doing this may have been bad for the battery as it was just a standard lead-acid starting battery. There's now an Optima deep cycle/start combination battery in its place and it's been fine.
It would have been a couple of months ago that I recall looking down at the odometer and noticing that the gear indicator had reappeared - it was months after the new battery went in. Given that the two didn't seem to correlate I just gave up trying to troubleshoot the issue.
I'm glad yours worked itself out as mine seems to have done. Next time it disappears I'll be checking those battery terminals in the first instance.
I wonder if anyone has any ideas why the BCU seems to sometimes magically change the settings for Auto/Manual and Diesel/Petrol? Anyone?
