View Full Version : D4 RAI water drain

I noticed the other day that my LR fitted RAI has a small whole on the bottom of the main box which I assume is to drain water that has got in the top somehow.
My question is as I have had the RAI sealed by replacing the internal air pipe/fabric tube with a solid pipe by the dealer, is there a problem if I now seal this whole?
Is there any other system used to remove any water that finds it's way into the RAI / snorkel before it gets to the moving bits?
It seams silly to have sealed the internal area (inside the guard) and then leave a whole on the outside at the lowest point.
I don't plan on using the RAI to it's full height, wading thru 2m of water but it would be nice to know it's going do the job if required.

Thanks

Mike - I think you'll find there are two points at the bottom of the airbox. One is the locating lug - which if I remember correctly, isn't actually open. The other is a one-way valve.

The circular plug in the centre is the one-way valve, and the bottom right is the locating lug.

Reading by post again I may have mislead you as to the location of the hole in question.

The hole I noticed is underneath of the "square box type section" at the bottom of the RAI / Snorkel on the outside of the vehicle, where it enters the bodywork.

Did you remove the valve. I'm looking for one, so I can get the exact dimensions (the rubber valve). They rot out, and I'm trying to source them for folks. Pictures, dimensions, etc. would be handy. I know I'm being a bit lazy, in the off chance someone has one laying around, so I don't have to remove my box, which has no rubber, it's rotted off.

I don't think you misled any one including Jonesy.

I believe he was indicating that if the hole in the RAI is plugged or not any water that gets into the RAI and finds it way to the airbox will drain out the one way valve in the airbox.

I personally would plug the hole - did LR seal the RAI to the internal pipe - and double check the one way valve at each air filter change to ensure it is doing its job and is clear of dirt etc.
