Hi All,
I wonder if someone can help me out here. I am looking at buying a 1999 D2 but I am a little concerned about some dash warning lights.
The car has ABS, Traction Control & Diff Lock lamps permanently on I have heard a bit about the 3 Amigos but is this combination normal.
The Diff Lock light worries me as it may have been locked in for some time and I guess that would not do the box / transfer case any good.
Any suggestions ???

Three amigos is ABS,TC and HDC lights combination. Common fault is shuttle valve failure. In sticky threads you can find full description of this failure and liquidation of it.
And about CDL light - D2 98-02 have no CDL, but it can be installed. Ask previous owner about it.

I asked the owner of the car and he claims the CDL light has been on since he had the front tail shaft replaced by his mechanic he is not really into working on cars or understanding what caused the problem he just takes it to the mechanic to fix.

As above for the 3 amigo lights. The 1999 Disco transfer case will have the CDL internals but no actuator cable mechanism. (Mid 2001 through 2002 models don't have the internals)
Sounds as though the CDL has been engaged - to disengage this you will need to get under the car and find the CDL spiggot on the top of the front output casing of the transfer case and turn it with a 10mm spanner to disengage.
The photo below shows the spiggot and a factory CDL actuator as fitted to 2003 and 2004 Discovery models.

Does transfer case have electrical switch which locks and turns on the light on the dash?

More or less.
If you've got the Diff lock light on then you've got the internals.
If it's been on since a prop shaft repair job they probably locked the diff to keep the vehicle mobile.
As said, climb underneath while the car is cool so not to burn yourself, reach up on top of the transfer case until you find the spigt. 10mm spanner and off it will go, but you might need to move it a metre or so for it to disengage.

The switch can be seen on the right edge of the photo above. 1999-2001 transfer cases will have only that switch - 2003/2004 transfer cases have 2 switches - the additional one being beside the output flange.

Seems plausible, that CDL was activated when the prop shaft was removed to keep car mobile. But it is not good for the resourse of the transmission to run on asphalt roads with CDL activated...

Yes this is absolutely correct, I believe they call it "wind up"
I've also read some people have experienced this on hard dirt roads!

Sorry, didnt understand. I just meant that if guys in the workshop didnt unlock the CDL and all the time since the prop shaft rebuilding owner ride on asphalt or concrete roads (especially turn), there was a heavy load on the transfer case, because of different angular velocity.
In the dirt/mud, on the countrary, CDL must be locked and TC must be off. On the D2a when CDL activating TC turning off.

The CDL light can also come on if the brake light fuse pops.
Check the fuses.

Just what I was thinking and how long(how many k's) has it been on for is what would concern me?

Any sustained period of time driving on-road with the diff lock isn't going to be good for the centre diff and probably other parts of the running gear.
Time to get it checked out methinks.

It won't actually effect the centre diff as the diff is locked and not, well, diffing.
It will have wind up, wil slip tyres every now and then but unless you're driving like a tool it won't break anything.
Of course there may also be a centre diff issue and it's been locked to keep it quiet.

What sniegy said.
This is the 'hidden brake light fuse is blown' warning light. My MY99 had this recently after connecting a dodgy trailer to the socket.
On mine the diff-lock light blinked in unison with the indicators though. It had me worried: I thought that there was a chance that my CDL was going to suddenly engage at 85km/h and scatter pieces of LR all over the highway.
But if yours is on full-time then that's probably something competely different.
Best of luck.
