View Full Version : Two Chicks and a Defender

This has now turned into a Three Chicks and Defender and possibly even Four Chicks and a Defender.
So whats it all about.
Well, I have just purchased a 2000 TD5 Defender 130. Not sure if I am happy or sad about that! I do remember my the grin I used to have with my old 130.
With this in mind I do understand that I will have to dust off the tools again!
The Defender I bought is in Perth and of course I live no where near Perth. Having travelled the Nullabor 11 times including twice on a motorbike I suggested that my wife may perhaps like to fly to Perth and drive it back. This would give her a well earned break as well as an adventure. It would be cheaper to truck it over here but there is no adventure in that. One of her friends was keen too so they have both purchased their tickets and hit Perth on the 6th of April. since then another friend has signed up and possibly another one. So far their are three chicks and a Defender involved in this Journey.
This is what it currently looks like.

The girls are looking forward to this trip and aiming to get back home in 5 days. I normally do it in three so this should give them some easy days and allow them to see what they like on the way.

I rang this bloke up only to find out it had been sold.
I found the Same defender advertised as per first group of pics. He bought it for his son who didn't like it. Too big in the city.
I know it was a firefighting vehicle, I know it has been Chipped, has carpet in the front, new tyres, sub woofer and a clutch booster added.
It has a steering box leak and the compressor may be suspect for the AC.
The girls leave on Saturday week, the 6th of April and aim to be back home on the 10th April.
Hilarity to follow I am sure! Standby all those Aulro members en route you are now on call for assistance:angel:
In the meantime Daddy Day care for me, can't wait we are going to have some fun!

Great heading, sounds like a title for a book.
I'm sure you have already thought of it, but I'll mention anyway, have you had a mechanic give it a once over just incase there is any worn hoses etc. don't want the misses and her mates stranded on some lonely stretch of highway.
I wish them luck.

The 130 looks great - fancy someone not wanting it ...
Well they're not planning on taking long to do the trip are they ? :) I would take a bit longer to have a look at things on the way....
If they're lucky at this time of the year lack of a/c won't be too much of an issue.
All this is obvious I guess - but ensure that your RACV is covered up to the max, have them carry some ATF to top up the p/s, cartons of drinking water & all the usual extras / tools / jack etc, get them to keep an eye on the tyres & pressures (long hours @100kph can be murder on used tyres) - 'cause I guess there'll only be 1 spare?
Bottled drinking water is really expensive between Kalgoorlie or Esperance and Ceduna - Port Augusta.
The "motels" at the fuel stops can be of variable quality so most people (incl me) just camp - which should be fine - as long as they don't mind the howling dingos through the night in some spots.
If they feel that there is safety in numbers the fuel stops have "camping areas" where they charge backpackers and grey nomads a fee, but for me the highway hilton is preferable and afaik quite safe.
There is limited mob ph cover closer to the fuel stops -a satphone could be a handy item - but the people are friendly and I couldn't imagine anyone not stopping if help was needed.
But you know what it's like, having done it a number of times - my apologies if my remarks sound like I'm trying to teach you to suck eggs - just want them to have a safe trip and a good time.
There are good aulro people along the way too - I was helped out recently in SA when coming back east.
Look forward to reading an update on their adventure :)

I got the car checked out my a mate who is more than capable of doing this. After checking it out he left me a voicemail message telling me I was a !@#$#@ idiot if I buy it. I had to laugh at that. Defenders are not for everyone! It appears to be the real deal and in the photos he emailed me back he had a running commentry on each photo including the landcruiser he had for sale for $12,000. he tells me the AC is not working but the owner tells me it is definitely working. This is one of the problems you have when the owner is not there when it was looked at. I am going by the assumption it is not working.
Even though I have done this trip 11 times I haven't done it for 10 years so any information that anyone can provide will not be looked upon as teaching me to suck eggs. I appreciate all feedback.

Landcruiser for sale $12,000 G Wagon may be for sale? Mate came to the conclusion this bloke just buys weird cars!

Interesting set up. I don't remember the clutch being heavy on my 130 but apparently this one was heavy enough to warrant this set up.

Hi Gillie, we now have our own "Thelma And Louise Go Defender".

Nice pictures of the truck but where is the picture of the "chicks" !!!
If we are going to follow their travels we need to at least see who we are reading about.

Takes me back to my Uni days where I hitch hiked from Perth to Melbourne ! Last lift was from Adelaide to Melbourne where I drove the driver's car most of the way at 60kph. to help a young lady who was running in her engine!

Hope they all have a great time.
Cheers, Peter

At this stage there is only three going. They leave Bright on the 5th of April and travel to Melbourne. They then catch a flight to Perth and then a taxi to a mates place where the car will be located. Then they start heading east. I will log their progress here in this thread as info is downloaded.
Therefore at this stage there is nothing to report.

The old rack on and the newer one strapped on upside down. Looks like the girls won't have a tarp for the journey.
Mate will go through the vehicle and give it the once over as well as get some spare oil and ATF for the ladies.
Not long to go, Girls leave Bright this Friday night for an early flight on Saturday.

Maybe "A" frame ball joint, loose/worn suspension bush, or a driver that's not real familiar with the Landy backlash.

Before they hit the road, get some one to make sure the wheel gearings are freshly greased and the brake pads are good.
And before they set off, a RAC or equivalent, safety check of radiator hoses, etc would give piece of mind as well.
A old mechanic friend of mine once told me,
don't worry about whines, wows or whistles,
do something quick about the clicks, clonks, and crunches.

Check that when greasing the wheel bearings, probably the splines in flanges and the outside spline of the axles are a bit worn.

That's the Fast Fill breather hose. It allows vapours out of the fuel tank up to the point at which it is supposed to be full. Then it makes the nozzle trigger shut off. After that the fuel level should always drop below that hose unless you park as an extreme sideways angle. I see a barbed joiner in there, and that type of hose is very prone to perishing. Unless the vehicle is going off road I wouldn't fuss too much, fix it when you get the vehicle in your hands. Failing that, cut out the barbed joiner and replace with a longer section of steel/copper tubing without barbs, and a couple of clamps.

After spending most of the day shopping in Perth for some camping gear and food and god knows what they went back to my mates place where he cut out the split and rejoined the overflow pipe. Reports from the wife is that the car is traveling well and everyone is having a good time. Apparently there is curtains for the windows which has a press stud arrangement and they have used this to keep the sun from shining into the back window. I have no idea what they mean and didn't realise it had any thing like this. It seems to be a hit though. The stereo and subwoofer has been another hit. Tomorrow they are going to Kalgoorlie and will end up probably around Caiguna would be my guess.

Thats a cracker!
Just got off the phone to the wife. They stopped at Balladonia for the night. She did say that there was a new 130 at Norseman that was checking them out ;) I think this was at the roadhouse? They did mention a brown defender as well but not sure if this is one and the same?
They had a couple broken down not far from fraser Range. New pajero and caravan which was overheating and then just stopped and would not start again. They turned back and the couple soon realised that the girls were there to help and not Kill them! They gave the lady a lift to Fraser range to call RAC at Norseman, they offered to tow the van back to Fraser range for them but the couple were happy to wait the 3 hrs on the side of the road. They were very grateful.
I will upload some pics when they send them, unless they continue to natter away and forget.

They'll be more than half way home when they get to Ceduna and it would be shorter for them to miss Adelaide altogether - from Port Augusta they can go direct via Burra, Mildura and along the Murray Valley Hwy to home.
Tell them to stop & take a look the Australian Farmer sculpture in Wudinna (on the main highway between Ceduna & Port Augusta) - heaps better than any big galah or big prawn.
Sounds like the trip is going really well :)

I had a big night last night with Monthly meeting at CFA and trying to organise the kids to go to Nannies last night. By the time I got the kids into bed it was quiet late. I spoke to my wife who I believe made it to Fowlers Bay yesterday. They were pretty tired and We didn't chat for long. They were going to stop at Nullabor but it was blowing a gale and being so rocky there was no chance of pitching a tent, Yalata roadhouse , I believe is no longer in operation and all the camping information suggest you would be better off to not stop around this area. I am unsure of what their plans are for today. Phone coverage was very choppy where they were.
The most expensive for fuel was Caiguna at 1.97 for Diesel.

Hey Gillie, You're doing a great job mate. I remember when we were trailer trash in the first few years of marriage/ kids etc and living in a 16ft van with 1 colic stricken screaming baby/ newborn and a vomitting 4 year old. 3am, one up all up :( Then work start at 7am....
The misses has blocked out the first 2 years so much so that I have to remind her of things sometimes, so the best thing for your better half is to spend time with her mates on a road trip of a lifetime! She no doubt could do with this in a big way after 4 kids:D.
It's not about browny points, its all about the pleasure you get seeing your significant other enjoying themselves and experiencing LIFE. Even if you are knee deep in vomit and driving a porcelain bus at all hours...:D
It's all good!

Nah, Its all about the Brownie points!
You are quite correct here JC, Personally I am getting a thrill seeing the pics and knowing they are having a great time. Our original plan was to both go over with the kids and bring it back. We thought it wouldn't be fair to the girls though, A 6,4 and 1.4 year old aren't going to enjoy a trip like this especially if they are crook. The cheapest option was to throw it on a truck for about $820. Driving was never going to be a serious option until some of her friends expressed an interest. It is not only me doing Daddy day care. All these women are in the same mothers group so there are another three Dads looking after the kids and stepping up!
They are leaving things to be done next time and aren't seeing it all. When my wife went into Fraser Range they had 3 hr chopper flights with wine and nibbles for $40 per head. Unfortunately this wasn't till next week. Now I think about it perhaps they say that to everyone who inquires!

Not sure if you could consider this "looking after your ladies"
Send four women to the other side of the country to drive back in perhaps one of the most uncomfortable and unreliable vehicles ever made in some of the remoteness parts of Australia! :D
They will certainly remember it and I guess that is what helps to make it a great adventure to be spoken about in years to come.

Renmark is the destination tonight and should set them up well for arrival at home tomorrow. Looking at the map Renmark would be halfway between Streaky Bay and Bright. 787 km to do today and 759 km to do tomorrow.
My girls are missing Mum. Happy to report that they have all come good with the last spew at 1Am for Miss 6 and 2AM for miss 4. Kids seem to bounce back pretty good and you would never know they were sick except for the washing machine going!

They will make it home today wont they? such a sensational trip:D bet youare getting excited now!
They are due home today. I guess all good thing will come to an end. I am busy cleaning the house, doing the washing, vacuuming and mopping. Which sort of got out of control when everyone was crook.
I think all the girls will be in two minds. They will no doubt all be missing their family and kids and looking forward to getting home again but also perhaps sad that such an epic Journey is coming to an end. I am sure they will remember the last 6 days for many years to come. Some of the scenery they have seen and captured looks amazing and I am glad they broke up the journey by doing a short drive from Fowlers Bay to Streaky Bay and stopping early and getting a chance to have a rest and sight see.
The kids are getting excited that Mum is coming home. Miss 1.4 has been awesome for me. The only one that didn't throw up! She would sleep through the night and might stir once in the night for 30 seconds before going back to bed. Hopefully she has been weened now! :D and breastfeeding days are behind us. Miss 4 and Miss 6 have transformed from being crook to being full of beans. the recovery for these two has been amazing in such a short period of time. They are cleaning up the toy room and their room as I type this, with no complaints. They know Mum won't come home to a messy house! :D Better get back to the Vacuuming!

Thanks Sue for the comments. I am sure there will be a few more photos to add in the coming week after they get back. I too, have enjoyed the ride as I am sure they have to.

An awesome story. I wish my wife could drive a manual so I could send her off on the same adventure to visit her family in Melbourne. I guess you can't answer this, but, are you more excited at seeing the new truck, or catching up with the wife? Thanks for the entertaining story.

Interesting you say that. One of the girls can not drive a manual but I guess out on the Nullabor is as good a place as any to learn. Reports back is that she did an awesome job.
Absence does make the heart grow fonder and it will be great to have them home safe and sound...... but she is bringing a Defender home.........
It is a win win situation really. :D

My girlfriend doesn't even have a license. Currently we own 2 Land Rovers and live inner city.
Or should I say, I bought 2 Land Rovers and she lets me drive her places. :D

You need to work on that Judo ;)
While its definitely quite doable to live inner city without a license, its a big country out there and IMO so much better if you can both drive.
And when you buy MORE LR's, she can do the delivery drives with her mates so everyone is happy :D
If she's never driven a manual get her out somewhere isolated/open in the County. Easy to learn basic clutch control in something slow/lumbering that you have to try REALLY hard to stall.

Mate, you have it easy.
My Girlfriend is a die hard toyota fan, who's come closer to rolling the Phantom (On her own driveway) than I have in my offroading pursuits.
Add to that she bags me out for driving an auto ( I can drive a manual just fine  ).
At least I can reverse a trailer :D
Still, she puts up with me so I guess I can't complain :lol2:

This thread has been good fun to follow over the past week, I'm almost sorry it is coming to an end too! I'm glad everything went well for the ladies and I'm sure that, although they've had a great time, they're looking forward to being home with family. A great effort all round!

The question remaining though is just what the heck do we read now that "Gillies Girls" are back home?:D

Well the girls got home around 5.30 last night I think. All the husbands and kids were there waiting for their girls. It made me stop and think how many people are involved or affected by this journey. Four blokes and 10 kids.

I am in the black tshirt holding our youngest.
The moment! the came up the road with the radio blaring and the sub woofer thumping. The tune on the radio? Lets here it for the boy by Deniece Williams. !!

My wife is still not here however. She has had to rush off to Melbourne this morning. But she will be back tonight and She left the Defender.
Unfortunately I can't drive it. I still have the kids and will need to do some modifications before they can ride in it. So it is just there taunting me, But gee whiz there is something eye catching about it. I will have to wait till she gets back and maybe get a drive of it tomorrow.

Thanks, I am glad other people enjoyed the journey as much as I did. It has been really great reading the comments here by everyone and much appreciated. My wife is keen to have a look at this thread when she has time.
It was also really good to hear that members wifes were looking over shoulders at this thread also.
I am so glad that they were able to do it and do it safely without any problems.
One story which came out, never to be spoken about again..... When they were traveling from Southern Cross to Kalgoorlie they didn't fuel up. I received a Text Message asking how many litres the fuel tank held. A quick search on here revealed the magic number of 75litres and if the light goes on there is about 15 litres left. The light was on, and the girls were panicking. The fuel guage is quiet slow to drop in the first half tank but the last half it apparently drops pretty quickly. My wife had enough sense to contact a bloke towing a camper in front of them on the UHF which I sent with them. She explained the predicament and he said he had Jerry cans onboard with Diesel if needed and kept an eye out in the review mirror. His name was Mick (Thanks Mick!) They got to fuel up at the next stop and put 78 litres of diesel in the tank! Lesson learnt and the tank was never under half for the rest of the journey.
I have just had a bit of a rat around the ute and found these.

I have driven it about 5 metres :( Still looking after the kids) My Wife had to go Melbourne today.
I have unpacked a few things and given it a once over. Can't wait to do an oil change on it, looking at how much space there is to get to the filter!
There are certainly a few things that need fixing but nothing major so far. EGT kit was a bonus find.

Thanks everyone for coming along for the ride. I didn't get to drive it for a day. My first test drive was at night time and I realised I only had high beam lights. The next day I replaced the Indicator, high beam switch which came with the vehicle for obvious reasons and that fixed the problem. The lights are not too bad actually and look to have some sort of ballast attached to them. I will have to have a closer inspection.
The rear window is classic 130 and in need of some attention, The oil leak in the driveway from the power steering is getting bigger everyday! I have got some things on order to sort out the classic problems and will probably do another thread for all that stuff.
There are a few more pictures I will upload to photobucket at some stage so you will have to look through them Epic dragon and see if any are suitable. I will let you know when I get around to this.
This is my 2nd Defender 130, the last one being a 97 TDI.
First priority is to get the bar in the back for the kids seat. I have the materials but not the time at the moment. I have a bullbar lined up and will swap the lights and winch over to it at some stage.
