Diff Oil

Can anyone please tell me what diff oil to use for my P38?

Did you find out? I'm soon to fit my ashcroft locker so will need ot find out as well. But to be honest I haven't looked to hard yet, thought this forum might have been the easy way out using the search tool..... and arrived here.

Recommended is 75W 90, but I did mine last year with 80W 90.

Thanks Mate. Believe it or not I just remembered I had the Rave manual (touch wood I haven't had to use it yet) and found it "Final drive units Texaco Multigear 75W 90R".

I've changed fluids and changed the air suspension but nothing yet that has required a workshop manual although I downloaded it in anticipation ha ha.. Touching lots of wood at the moment cause I've had it for over a year :o

Alright here's the hard one that Rave doesn't seem to have.... Well search didn't find it. The suggested backlash in a p38 diff? I will likely just check my existing one and have the same backlash when I put it all back in but I do have access to a dial gauge so thinking I might do it right..... Thinking :)

Set it by feel! When you pull your current centre out, have a feel how much backlash it has, and if your crownwheel wear is good, when you tighten everything up give it the same "feel". If you have overdriven or underdriven wear then it is advised to get the right tools.

Failing that you could get your centre out, fit your crownwheel to the Ashcroft centre and take it in to a diff shop and they can set it for you.

Make sure you take it steady when drilling the hole for the air line. Plenty of lube on the drill bit and slow speed.

Yeh I remember you saying that, so that was my original thought. Then I saw an old dial gauge and magnetic stand at work today and couldn't help think why not set it as stock as possible or at least check it and hopefully not change anything preferably...

I know that a lot range rovers click in the rear when going forwards to backwards but I thought I'd check the backlash to see of it could be that... May even be the UV joint. Might be something else even. Not a huge thing cause it appears common but I'd like to remove the sound if I can and that was a good start.

To be honest, not often Ron. Maybe once a week ha ha.

But in my lazy defence, my previous cars didn't have diff oil in the normal manual as far as I know, well the last one definitely didn't even have gearbox oil. Yeh engine oil, power steering etc but not the diff oil. Hmm might pay more attention to it in future. And now I remember I have Rave on my laptop I'll ask less known questions...

I haven't looked at mine for ages but I happened to have it open at that section looking at coolant. I changed the water pump today. That will be mentioned in another thread (with pics).

I have read the owners handbook once or twice but RAVE is my fav :cool:

RAVE says 75W90R Texaco Multigear, which is a semi synthetic GL-5 as far as i could work out.
