2008 2.4 puma
Got a whistley, whiney type noise when I back off the throttle about 2000rpm? Only does it intermittently, only just started on a big trip I did this weekend? Turbo hose, gasket or just another puma noise??

Mine always had a turbo whine. And my friends does as well

This is not the normal whine when you the turbo spins up, this is a much different noise when you back off the throttle - difficult to describe, sounds at bit like a belt slipping, happens intermittently

I am guessing its coming from the front then, any chance it could be a gear whine or is it more turbo related?
My front diff used to whine a fair bit before they replaced it.

Yes from front - Na its not a diff whine, convinced its a turbo/induction thing.

Check the small air box hose that comes off the turbo to air box hose....if that's split itl make quite a noise.
There is a recall for some of the puma defenders for new turbo to intercooler hose as its a metal and rubber one and its changed to all rubber....I believe this is because of splitting issues but not sure what chassis range its for as I've only done it to very new ones.
If you know a smoker a relatively simple method for checking for obvious boost leaks is get them to smoke 3-4 cigarettes and blow the smoke only into the turbo inlet. They have to put their mouth right up to the hose each time tight so you do look rather stupid....but its a cheap "smoke machine" for checking for leaks.
Note: this won't work if the boost leak is only under boost pressure.
Do a youtube video so we can hear it?
Does it do it only when on the move or can you get it to do it at standstill?

At the moment it only does it during driving, and not all the time

Took it to LR, no trace of a problem, yet another mysterious noise to add to the list of other mysterious noises!!!!! Thinking that turning the radio up is the best advice of all.

Record the noise and put it on YouTube so we can hear it?

Jacko,
Maybe a bit of bypass on one of the clamps at full boost? Always difficult to find when the engine's not laboring...
My first 300 Tdi had a whistle that couldn't be found until we wrapped "Gungum Bandage" (exhaust repair product) in thin strips around the aluminium to rubber joints. Unfortunately did them all at the same time, so I never knew which one it was...
Cheers,
Lou

Big fan of gungum, held together the exhausts on a range of old bangers I used to drive :)

Fully loaded down to Albany this weekend and the whistle is back. Sixth gear, 2000 revs, let off gas and you get a whistle, started to think it is speed related as doesn't do it at slower speeds? Still going fine, heaps power, all a bit odd really, not a peep from it when Im just running around the metro?!?'

Sounds like the start of an issue I had with my 2009 Puma?

Turbo gasket it the culprit - turbo off soon, will re-fit with thick copper style gasket. I will update - stealer could not diagnose, spent good money :(

How high pitched a noise are we talking here? Asking because I have a very high pitched (almost radio interference style sound) happening at the moment...

Difficult to describe, squeaky whistle, take off turbo heat shield, if its leaking there will bee soot. Copper gasket from Germany fixes it allegedly!!!!!!! Hope so

Defender2 - View topic - Tdci improoved Manifold to turbo gasket (http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic6130.html)
Cheers - suspect mine is something different it sounds like radio interference in time with engine revs.
Might get me a copper gasket just in case though...

Before you fit the copper gasket check if the turbo manifold is warped and by how much. The gasket will seal OK as long as the manifold isn't badly warped. If it is warped it may need to be skimmed first to guarantee the seal or the copper gasket may blow out just like the OEM one did.:BigThumb:

Gents
Still waiting for a mechanic on this one, how hard is it to do this job yourself.
Is it just a socket set a a straightedge to check how flat the manifold is???
Should I have a go myself???
Cheers
John
