Hi there,

While standing outside of my D2 TD5 the other day I could here a rattling noise coming from underneath the car. Upon inspection I found it to be coming from a fitting at the rear of the transfer case between the Transmission break Drum and the transfer case as shown in the attached picture. The part that is causing me grief is highlighted by the screw driver, with the engine on it rattles around and there is about 10mm play up and down there also seems to be quite a lot of oil leaking in this area. Does anyone know what the part is i'm pointing too? any info on what could be my problem would also be much appreciated, i'm currently in Karattha and will be embarking on a trip across the top including the Gibb River Road and down the East Coast and have about 8 weeks to get the car ready, need to diagnose the problem ASAP!

Cheers

Tommy

That's a vibration damper. It's there to smooth out any vibrations that might otherwise be transmitted throughout the car. You should be able to remove it without any problems.

The oil is possibly coming from the back of the intermediate shaft. You should be able to see it on the other side of the brake drum. It has a large staked nut on it. Not an immediate problem but will need attention soon.
