My Tdi's TC has been leaking from the front seal for about 12 years and it's really starting to annoy me,what seals do I need for it?,I read somewhere that most people are just sliding the TC back on a jack with longer headless bolts screwed into the gearbox,I was going to do it that way with some high temp sealant on the matching faces.Any idea's or tips would be greatly appreciated. I don't remember the seal dimensions, but there are a few other areas the box can leak from.
The intermediate shaft has an O ring which can leak.
There are 2 bolts that go "from" the GB side into the TC which often leak as these threads need sealant on them.
They often allow oil to leak between both boxes.
If sealing both faces make sure plenty of sealant plugs up a small gap you will see at the bottom of the box where the oil is coming out.
Try sealing the threads of the 2 bolts anyway as this might save you a lot of time.

It sounds like the front output shaft seal is leaking, as you mention 'the front seal'. If you mean that you are leaking transmission fluid from the transfer box, then you need to replace the input shaft seal. The t-box itself is mated dry to the gearbox.

Pat,

The front of your TC has two or three "walse" or "welsh" plugs (you know the type to be a recessed blank into the case) that will be worth replacing as well.

Mine leaked for about 4 years and they replaced the expensive shaft seal (lots of money in labor!) and it still leaked afterwards. Turned out to be one of those plugs (the higher one you can only get to by splitting the gearbox and TC).

Never really worked out what their purpose were but $2.50 solution with a 5 hour workshop labor charge... you gotta love Land Rover design!

Cheers,

Lou

Pat, you can get a whole seal kit for the LT230 that contains all the seals and gaskets you need. Murphy's law would surely come into play if you only ordered one seal and then found another leak when you pull the box off.

Part number was RTC3890, and I think it cost me about $25 delivered
