View Full Version : Water pump leak?

I finally found the coolant leak in my 1999 V8 D2. I had to top up about half a litre after 3 months so it is not a huge leak. I am suspecting that the leak comes from the water pump. But since I am not sure I took some photos for you guys.

These photos are taken from underneath. You can see the viscous fan to the left in the 1st photo.

In this photo you can see there is coolant under the sump pan as well. I assume it has just run down from the water pump and moved backwards from the wind while driving.

My next question is: Do I just replace the water pump gasket or should I replace the pump itself as well?

Depends if you know how old it is. Given they are not that exxy compared to an engine I would be inclined to replace all. And also the amount of work required, That if gasket only is replaced that big irish fella says 1 week later the pump will die! :D

And if you want a little bit of advice, replace the water pump bolts at the same time if this is the first water pump change.

Ask me how I know

How do you know and how do I find the right bolts? I will probably order in from the UK.

Get yourself a copy of Microcat (it's available from the shop) to find the right part numbers for the bolts.

My 98 D1 V8 is just about identical to your 99 D2 at the front end. And on replacing the water pump a year or so back I reused the old bolts. One of which snapped off..... in the block. Retrieving part of a steel bolt from inside an aluminium block is not a game to be played quickly.

Save yourself a couple of days work, and spend another 10bucks on some new bolts.

I think I have the same issue. See the bright red droplet forming at the base of the waterpump.

I probably need an oil seal as well, going by the mess under there.:(
