View Full Version : Can i install IRD from 2.5l v6 in a 1.8l freelander?

I have a 1.8l freelander which i've used mostly for city driving. For the past 6 months i have been driving upcountry every week and the car has difficulty going over 120kph. At 120kph the revs are at 3500rpm and seems to be staining. Within city driving i have no problems since speed is not really an issue.

I should also point out that after going though the usual 1.8l k-series nightmares i swapped my engine with a 1.8l toyota 7aFE engine two years ago.. best decision i ever made. Towards the end, the original engine could manage 110kph at best. The current setup still uses the original wiring setup, MEMS controller and all sensors from LR, as well as the original PG1 type gearbox.

My question is, can i change the standard IRD in the 1.8l with the one from 2.5l v6 auto? I know the 1.8l IRD has a ratio of 1.467 : 1, and the v6 has a ratio of 1.359 : 1. How will the different gear ratios affect performance? I'm hoping that finally at 120kph the revs should be lower and hence improve efficiency and speed? correct me if i'm wrong.

Any help will be appreciated. Maybe someone has tried the IRD swap before?

It will fit but you will need to change the cooler to a 4 cylinder type.

You could also swap the internals from a diesel gear box as the final drive for K1.8 are 4.200:1 and diesel are 3.647:1.

By doing this you will drop performance but gain higher top speeds. Fuel consumption will change also, But cant say if it will be better or worse.

Any photos of the engine conversion?

As Woko said - try to get a TD4 IRD as their gearing a bit better than the L series diesel and will give you about 2600rpm at 100kph.

However, if you can only manage 120kph with your current gearing you still have a problem as your engine with the standard 1.8 gearing should pull much faster than that. You either have an engine power problem or some binding of some sort in the drivetrain (brakes, VCU etc ???).

Thanks alot guys. I have the v6 IRD so thats a great relief. Al take pics today and post.

About the power issue, i have the 17'' rims with 235/55 r17 tyres.. the biggest tyre that would fit without additional mods. Could this contribute much?

I had larger diameter tyres on my L series diesel and it would pull over 150kph (the fastest I ever went in it) so it is not likely to cause your speed to be so low.

You should be able to pull somewhere over 4500rpm in top gear with your low 1.8 gearing.

Here are the pics, i've had this setup for about 2 years 4 months now. I took a photo of the dash console when the car is running.. no ecu errors :)

Is there any more information on how this engine swap was done?

Cheers

Brings back memories of "JesusFreak" putting a turbo mazda engine in an FL1 and scrapping the original 1.8L engine, back in 2009.:)

He had a good Thread going for quite a while on the installation and then disappeared!!
