G'Day All,
About to take the plunge into 05 HSE V8 - last LR we had from new was an 07 110 Puma which gave us no end of grief, got to the point we wouldn't use it 'just in case' it broke down (had 6 trips back to the dealer on a tilt tray) traded it late 2008 with 21k on the dial for a new Hilux and dropped $20k on the 110:censored:
Anyway two HSE V8's to choose from 1 @ $30k with 140k on the clock and the other @ $33k with 111k on the clock - both one owner, both with log books, one black & one silver....
One is from NQld and has done some bush, the other is a Mum's Taxi from the Gold Coast..... general use will be running from central Qld back to the NT every 4 or so months (by whatever track is open) so which one do I choose ......Black or Silver
(The wife will kill me if I buy another lemon..)

Based on color alone I'd go for the silver.
The price difference is only a dollar per kilometer so the lower k one may be just as good value on distance basis.
Based on running conditions it's hard to say whats better. The GC one sits in a salty air area and runs in stop start traffic conditions so may suffer from some surface rust and it's running conditions. The other possibly does easier but longer running. They both have service histories so I'd speak to the service agents about whats been done, also if anything they have recommended was deferred. Also make sure that any recalls have been carried out as well plus all software updates. The recalls you can check yourself through TOPIX (and maybe what sofware updates should have been done).

Many Thanks for advice - dealers both seem to be dragging their feet with responses to questions (Front end condition, suspension functionality, condition of spare etc.)
Will keep you posted as / if information comes to hand
Cheers

Just tell them you're also looking to keep having the servicing done and if they don't come forward with the info then it'll have to go elsewhere. Tell 'em both, and don't go back to either. You already know what their service is like.

Don't be surprised at a car dealers lack of response. Two weeks ago I drove the 100 kays to my local Toyota dealer look at buying a new Corolla. No accurate prices were available on the day and two phone calls from me since then to get prices have been ignored. Business must be real good.

Dealer no.1 has come back with the following information regarding completion of 'Factory Recalls' advising that this is the only info he can obtain ex LR Aust
Any ideas what these codes pertain to?
August 2006 - A016B, A034B, A036F & June 2011 - Q045B

They are all Service Actions or Recalls that have been carried out on your potential vehicle.
16 Fuel Tank
34 Air suspension compressor
36 Re-Assurance Program - vehicle parameter downloads/adjustments.
45 Spiral cassette alignment
Just going from memory, I may have the numbers mixed up, but you get the idea.

can't help with your decision however when I ordered my D4 2 weeks ago the dealer had just sold a V8 after being on the books for 300 days. Not a great demand for V8 (in Sydney at least) so you may be able to get a deal?

Early D3 V8's sell quite well because of how cheap they are and how reliable they are proving to be, where as new D4 V8's are horrendously expensive compared to D4 diesel versions.
The V8 engine in a D3 is a gem.

So the v8 d3 is the 4.4l jag motor right? How heavy on the fuel are the compared to the 4.0 Thor in a d2?

Thanks for the info - hopefully I'll have enough background to 'play' the dealers off against each other....been burnt too many times over the years to rush in

While I have never owned a V8 D3 I have driven them and read plenty of reports by members on here about their fuel economy, especially with country driving and if correct it knocks the Thor V8 for a six on fuel economy.
Still that wouldn't be hard, 4.0L V8 Rover engines are hardly economical.

Correct ;-)
The 4.4l in the L322 is a BMW variant as not to be confused with the engine in the D3.
The D4 engine is a beautiful purring 5.0l ahhh that sound !

The choice has been made "The Silver One" (black one is still being detailed.....for two weeks now???)
Sign on the dotted line on Monday, with a few subject too's
1.Mechanincal Report from Landrover specialist (yet to be determined - I only know of MR Landrover in Brisbane? any good operators around Marooka?)
2.Find some more money (or a sweetener or two) on the Trade In offer $31K on our as new Hilux
3.Subject to inspection (by one of my contractors - I'm in central Qld)
4.Subject to a satisfactory delivery arrangement (meet me half way in Gladstone?)
(As long as 1 & 3 meet expectation....I'll live with the rest)
Keep you all posted
Cheers

You'll love it FB, good luck, I have an '05 D3 HSE V8, its an excellent vehicle !
For the record on fuel - my D3 V8 uses at best under 12 (highway cruising), under 14 (country roads, medium offroad), under 16 (harsh offroad, spirited country roads) and ... wait for it ... 24 (short stop start town trips & mucho bootful).
t is an awesome sounding motor - I recently got a go-pro and one of the first things I did was put it right in the middle of the bonnet and give it a bootful on a country road - flat stick to about 100 or so - favorite home video ever. Ok maybe second favorite ... hahah ... but it's a fantastic sound and may explain some of my fuel economy figures !

I am a literalist stuck in metaphorsville ! Ok, will show off my inept video editing skills ... just have to work out how to edit clip, ensure audio level is suitable blah blah ... think I may need some frozen vodka to aid the activity ...
Here's a short one from an earlier foray to find a yacht in Penrose SF ... found the yacht and a small puddle (only puddle here, also need to apply rainx to gopro) ... Penrose SF - YouTube
Edit: Took less Vodka than I'd hoped Jellore SF - YouTube
Hands up those who think I need to change my squeaky sway bar rubbers !

All that half assed unskilled editing kind of ruins the sound (seems to also accentuate the wind noise), compared to the original on big spkrs it's quite flat. The original has a much deeper note.
Next outing (Yalwal week after next) I plan to put the gopro in the open box so the mic is not sealed away and hang a borrowed gopro off the back and attempt to spice it all together. Think I may also get some help with the editing hahaha !

I'm lying down and that sound still makes me go weak at the knees....gotta love a big right boot stuck into a decent sounding V8.
[goes off to see how much a MY99 D2 will fetch...]
