yes I was tossing up between juvenile Salmon and Herring, the Herring are unusual down this far but ocean temps/ currents could be to blame?

Aussie, could be right as The eyes aren't big enough for the Herring, They do share similar colours and markings, too!

It Was strange the Herring could be far south, judging by the time of year Juvenile Salmon are a better bet actually.

Adam.
Definately juvenile Australian Salmon.
They do look similar to a Herring,be careful. In WA there is no size limit for a Herring, there is for the Salmon. Its the fishos responsability to know the difference.

they are Australian salmon, I would also think they are from the sub species that migrate down the eastern seaboard and not the west coast of aus. The difference can only be distinshished by killing the fish and counting the gill rakers. I run the state ANSA tagging for a couple of years and worked with a guy doing his theis on flathead. very interesting when you get involved at that level. Have tagged and cought salmon 12 months later within 10km of the original tag location.
cheers
