Very interesting post in RR.net re. a bloke who has been recharging accumulators for the Audi (USA/Canada-based) enthusiasts for the past 10 yrs... recently did one for a RR... pics included.
Recharged ABS Brake Accumulator (http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/7-range-rover-mark-ii-p38/47256-recharged-abs-brake-accumulator.html)
wondering if there's anyone with requisite tools, pneumatic fittings and access to high pressure nitrogen supply (1000+psi) who might be able to provide a similar service locally... SWMBO has already banned me from experimenting with this on the front verandah

Interesting prospect, I reckon these would go off with a bigger bang than a clandestine meth lab :o

Very interesting.
It'd be great if they could be re-gassed in Oz. I think mine is getting on there, three pumps of the brake and the motor comes on.

If someone in the ballarat area has an accumulator in there spare parts they can get to me I'll try to see if I can modify my gear to recharge one. I'll be taking the nitrogen bottle back soon though. So you may need to wait until next time I need to regass some spheres. ( BOC charges you a ****load of rental if you keep the nitrogen bottle each month .... my wife tends to get "slightly annoyed" when she see's two lots of bottle rental coming in for something we don't really need :) ).

Was talking to a guy from an air and hydraulics place. He said recharging accumulator balls is quite easy and they'd do at least a few per month.
He rekons about $100 and was suprised it was only 80bar.
I dont think he knows that these ones dont have a valve, going in to see tomorrow.
I dont think they'd want to put one in.

It does seem to be a waste throwing out this unit and getting a new one every few years.
Do they slow leak or does the bladder rupture?
I believe the gas enters the brake system when it leaks out, resulting in a spongy pedal.
Its a pretty expensive thing to change.

As its a diaphram type accumulator the nitrogen simply weeps through it over time. Same as a helium baloon.
Think im going to have to bite the bullet and order one, the pump cycles every two brake applications now.

My other car hobby is Toyo/Lexus Soarers. I recently bought a twin turbo Soarer, with a few go-stupidly-fast mods ;), TC and ABS. It has a tired/dodgy accumulator and there is a guy in Melb who has been recharging the brake accumulators for years on these cars.
I will get my Soarer accumulator done soon, but my P38 is fine.
Benji - I can ask this guy if he wants to have a go at your accumulator or just put you in touch. Let me know.
Cheers, Paul.

If you could put me in touch that'd be fantastic.
The Soarers have the lexus v8s in dont they? I hate so say it, but id absolutely love one of those v8s in the p38. Mmm, one out of a wrecked 100 series.

Yeah, the V8 Soarer has the 1UZFE 4L 4-cam engine that puts out around 195 KW and 350 n-M.
The 100 series Landcruiser got the 4.7L 2uzfe which produces less power, but more torque, than the 4L 1uzfe :o
The twin turbo 1JZ-GTE 6 cyl engine in my other Soarer has more power and torque than the 1uzfe.
I would love to have a go at transplanting my over-boosted 1JZ TT in to a P38 as an academic exercise. I reckon it could easily chirp the tyres in the first 3 gears

Don't tell me you've bought another toy!
I go away for a few weeks and look what happens!

Boiling away in a record Canadian/Alaskan summer.

Paul,
Go for the 3UZ. They bolt in on the right mounts, The soarer/crown/supra share the same chassis members so all the engine stuff bolts up. Talk nice to me and I'll share the secrets of 15K+rpm and 800HP from one, naturally aspirated of course.

Was talking to a guy who's put in a gen 2 motor. Says he can smoke all 4 tires into second gear.
I don't know what the 3uz is in, the 200 series? But the 2uz is what the boffins at landrover should have done in 93ish. A major block fixup, 32 valve heads, dual tract inlet manifold, and later in the p38s life maybe variable exhaust valve timing.

3UZ, cast iron, 4.7. Non VVTi, but I can mod the block to provide the oil feed if you fit VVTi heads. We can make the VVTi work with Autronic (only) EFI management. Not much needs to be done from std to have superior (to rover) power and torque but a little work goes a long way. Cams are the most expensive part unless you have me go the whole hog on one and push the RPM boundaries sky high.
Hmmm, P38 @ 15000rpm anyone?

That's the 2UZ which is 4.7L with the cast iron block from the Landcruiser. The 3UZ is 4.3L with aluminium block from the LS430.
BTW I know of your handiwork through Toymods - impressive :)

Well the project Supra got sold on, lack of consistent funding, willingness to listen by the owner and subsequent ability to keep oil where required. Now turbo'd and making less power.
Now searching for new sugar daddy to fund engine building habit.
