Wheel nut missing?

Hi guys,

Just noticed this arvo a wheel nut missing, I'm wondering if someone nicked it or, the tyre shop did not tighten it up all the way when I had the new tyres fitted.

Has anyone else ever had problems with wheel nuts coming loose?

Oh and where can I source spare wheel nuts from, ATM I replaced it with one of the spare wheel nuts off the back.

Have you checked all of the remaining nuts........


Whenever I have tyres fitted I always hack up each wheel, undo all the nuts and them tighten them back up to my spec. Just incase that used a rattle gun and it become a mission later on to loosen the nuts.

If they are steel wheels, you can get them at anyLandrover specialist, and probably any dealer - same nuts from just before Series 3 on. If alloy wheels, you may have to go to a dealer and wait for them to get them - I really don't know, as I have had no experience with alloy wheels on Defenders.

And as Weeds says - have you checked the remaining nuts! The only reason they come loose is if they are not tightened, and if someone did not tighten one, they probably failed to tighten others.

when i had tyres fitted after a weekend away i spotted a missing nut, checked all the rest and all not tight. bob jane replaced the wheel nut.
just be careful using the ones from the rear wheel carrier, if like the disco they are not designed for use on the rolling wheels.

That's because it seems a lot of garages and tyre places have never even heard of a torque wrench in Australia...it's do it up FT with a gun or just nip it up with a bar.....I'm amazed there haven't been several deaths yet from it. If your caught letting a car go out the door without using a torque wrench to the correct setting for the vehicle in the uk it's instant dismissal.
I personally torque all wheels twice on every vehicle I work on. (Best to be double safe!) Once when they go back on and then again whilst its being washed after I've been on road test. My apprentice does the same....if I ever catch him not doing so he is aware I will refuse to have him any more, but he's a good lad and does it every time :)

Last year my dad lost the passenger front wheel off his tojo just after picking it up from the dealer after a service. Destroyed the wheel, and the brake disc as it skidded on it till it stopped, dented the guard, and door as the wheel bounced away. Luckily he was only doing 40km/h, and the car following was able to avoid the wheel as it bounced and rolled down the road then into the scrub. The dealer fixed everything, gave him a car to drive for a few weeks, and refunded the cost of the service.
But this could very easily have been a fatality, if he'd been going faster, or his wheel had bounced onto the bonnet of car following.
Maybe some workshops are going the other way, instead of tightening up to 40,000 mega Newtons, they don't tighten them at all. :wasntme:

They always have their get out of jail free card don't they, "please recheck your wheel nuts for correct tightness after 100kms".

Hey Guys, yes I have checked all the other nuts, some I managed to give an extra crank. They all seem good now. Still need to source new nuts. And no one ask if I've tried Nobby's. :)

initial Rattle gun then checked with bar BEFORE it leaves the hoist. We get to see many corroded alloys and filthy mud and rust coated hubs, I still warn customers to check AGAIN the next day if they fall into that category.
