Well, before I ditched my old pc (see other threads) I fitted the original drive and lo and behold the computer fires up. NoW for the problem. The computer runs XP so all you experts in XP should be able to help me. On boot up the computer reaches the "welcome" screen then takes 80 seconds to drop into the desktop page. Once inside, programs seem to run normally. The second issue is that when closing down the computer reaches the "windows shutting down" page then just sits there and doesn't shut down unless I manually hold the power button in. Can anyone be of assistance in these two issues? Jim

I am no expert by any means...
But, 80 seconds to startup in XP, i would almost consider "normal". XP loads everything it might need, right at the start.
Even on a stripped down, no options version i have installed in the carputer, it still takes nearly a min to boot from cold.
If you are going to keep it, then you can disable a lot of stuff from starting on boot. This will help a bit.
The shut down problem is similar. Stop a lot of the stuff you dont need from loading, and it should get better.
