Clutch/Drivetrain Clunk 2013 D90

Afternoon all and apologies if this has been raised before...

Had my D90 for a little over a month and just started to notice the following noise.

When releasing my foot from the clutch and pulling off in 1st or 2nd gear as my foot comes all the way off the clutch with no accelerator just as it comes off the clutch there is a 'doink' noise which it appears emanates from the rear differential. Doesnt happen every time and makes no difference the engine is cold or hot.

Anyone else experienced this or know what it might be??

It could be nothing but it certainly won't hurt to take it back to the dealer and ask them to have a look at it for you... :)

It's pretty common...

try releasing the clutch slower with a bit of the accelerator. I believe its the revvy thing causing it. Happens to me when I shift wrong or too quick. or heck too slow! lol the timing has to be perfect

Maybe that's where I'm going wrong, however mine is more when slowing down than speeding up. I will pay more attention

So car back from dealer today, took it in last week for another small problem and got them to have a drive and they reckoned it is a normal problem but mine was on the worse side.

So they re-shimmed the central diff and changed the seals. Its better but not completely gone. Im intrigued now. Apparently its not an issue, its just noise. Not convinced but not much more I can do.

On another interesting note turns out rodents have eaten through the cable which turns the diff lock light on the dash on. Theyre going to replace it for free as Im sure a week after I got it and went off road the light didnt come on so likely to be from the boat/port.

Drivetrain backlash is common with all new defenders, mine suffered quite badly from it. It's not good and over time puts a lot of strain on your drive train especially if you do a lot of low range work.

One thing I have learnt is that the stealers have no idea about how to address it properly and if you have a bad case you should go and see a landrover specialist mechanic.

They should start with the preload on the pinion bearings in the Diffs and goes right through setting the driveline up properly. It will be a whole new car to drive once you do.

Apparently I can't edit a post in forum runner!!

Check out this video it gives a perfect example of driveline backlash in the pumas. Also I should add that having someone set up the driveline properly will not be cheap so you might think about how much off road use it will get or if you are just driving around the city it might not be worth it.
