View Full Version : All this from a busted Globe????

Hi Gents,

I think I have finally realized that Landrover designers have an innate, quirky sense of humour!!

Driving down the freeway on friday night gone we got an amazing amount of faults come up on the dash of our D3.

It started with DSC fault then we added the following within 2 kms
HDC Disabled
Transmission fault
Special programs not available
Reduced engine performance

and finally the car lowered to access height.

Stopping a restarting the car cleared the faults but lo and behold they would return within 1km of driving.

Now in my opinion the car was driving as normal despite the christmas tree on the dash so on we continued.

Once we arrived home I got out of the car to open the gate and I noticed that 1 taillight was out (typical D3 I know), however even though no one was ion the drivers seat ALL the brake lights were on including the high line at the roofline.

My brain went "click" and I thought to myself "surely a blown or partially blown globe can't cause all this drama?!"

Anyway a job for the morning.....

Next day I dutifully jumped in the car and drive to the closest Dealer. Along the way I thought that I would test out my theory. Drive 10km with lights off no issues.

Switch lights on - 500m down the road and its Christmas again!

Of course I was up too early for the parts guy to be in to get a new globe, so back home I went.

I have removed said globe and we have had no issues since.

Car is in for service today and I have left in their capable hands - however experience has shown that I will get a mumbled comment and no real resolution despite great service from LR.

So seriously can a combined brake tail failure cause almost every system in the car to get so upset?

I am glad I have some mechanical knowledge, if I didn't look at these things with a sense of humour and use common sense I would have fallen out of love with our Discovery a long time ago

In short....Yes.
In fact if there is a short caused when the globe blows it wiill cause cascade faults and the system throws a hissy fit.
Less likely on >MY06.

MY08 D3

Apparently it is a short in the switch

Yep, brake switch short will do it too. Short in the same circuit. :BigThumb:

I have MY08 and was once stopped by car next door to tell me I had no brake light on drivers side. No problems with the car at the time. Replaced with a non OEM bulb from the servo and no problems since.

To be honest, I was more surprised there was no brake light blown warning like considering the myriad warnings in the D3.

no we have had constant globe failures - but the partial failure gives a short that sets off the fun.

Anyway got the car back after being overcharged to fix it and lo and behold - turn the lights on and all the tail lights are stuck on brake!!!

Turn lights off and put foot on the brake only 1 light comes on.

So much for QA.

Anyway LR copped it in both ears this morning and will be coming to my wife with a suitable replacement vehicle, taking hers away and fixing it god forbid properly.

try changing globes will decent LED globes I did and no problems since. (touch wood)
This is not only a LR thing my mates old Valiant blew a brake globe and the car would not turn off until he took his foot off the brake :p lucky for him, me having LR knowledge put him straight.
LR have been making drivers into mechanics since 1948 :)

Same experience, on leaving Brisbane last week my daughter informed me I had one side brake lights out.
Had a van on so not really worried, called in a few places no one could tell me what globe to replace with, 10 days later in Sydney a backpacker threw out a lot of gear as they were flying home, amongst it was one left of a two pack normal brake globe, reminded me to check mine !
Bottom globe was black, the spare he threw out fitted fine all works O.K. I had no problems and no warnings that a globe was blown !

P.S. this was after the alternator trouble we had, don't suppose it caused it ? These Disco's do funny things apparently. Nah surely not !
