Long range fuel tank protection

Hi,

I have a long range tank, the type that replaces the original tank but is bigger. It's a long ranger type. It does sit a little bit lower than the OEM spec and as a consequence is a bit exposed, in fact it's taken a bit of a hammering on a few occasions now. I'm starting to get abit concerned that I'm riding my luck with it and should get some sort of protection fitted.

So, has anyone done this? If so how? Custom guard or off the shelf product? Mounted to where and made of what? Any really good or really bad points?

I have a 2006 110 but details of any model would be of benefit.

Any pictures or advise from anyone who has some experience with this would be greatly appreciated.

I've got the same on my Defender, for about 5+ years now, it too has taken a bit of a hammering - never caused a problem tho, i think they're pretty tough. I had one for about 7 years on my Disco before this, also never gave me a problem.

Ian, I have the Long Range Automotive tank, it sits a good bit lower at the back than your Long Ranger.

I've dropped the 110 onto the tank a few times now and whilst it has a few dint in it, nothing to get worried about. In not sure I'd be too worried about it.

If you want additional protection, could you bolt a U shaped bit off the chassis rails? An alternative would be to drop the tank, empty & wash it and then have a 3mm (Stainless??) plate welded to the underside of the tank.

Hi Ian I have a bash plate under my long range tank made from ally checker plate. My tank is custom made 147ltr. The biggest issue with putting bash plates under fuel tanks is that if rocks can get in there they will and then rub a hole in your tank. I have foam rubber between mine to stop this. Tim
