Hi,

I've got a nearly new set of the standard Goodyear tyres back on the disco. And now I've got a ripped sidewall on one... So I've no spare at the moment.

Goodyear are no longer importing the tyres into Australia and the tyre places have offered me a Goodyear Efficient Grip SUV, which is a large road tyre. They have admitted that this would not be safe to use on the front of the car with the HT on the other wheel. Should I need to fit to to the rear I should drive as far as the nearest tyre dealer and replace the rest of the set. Doesn't sound like a deal to me...

I've rung a lot of places and nobody has any available.

I was trying not to change brands to avoid problems caused by different nominal sizes between brands. But that just isn't possible.

What are the other OEM tyres fitted to the D3? Is it the Pirelli Scorpion ATR?

The goal here is the nearest is size & grip characteristics to the OEM Goodyear.

Any suggestions?

Steve

If you can find an economical way to get them from SA to Bris I have 5 goodyears - 4 with only 10,000km on them and 1 brand new.

Oops, I've moved to Sydney, one of the reasons I've been quiet recently.

Courier quotes very from 85-500 to get one tyre shipped! It is quite alarming.

I have the road hazard warranty on the tyres, so if I can find an appropriate one to fit then it will only cost me the proportion of the tread I've worn off (i.e. not a lot).

However, if I get really stuck, and you don't want the earth for the new one, I might just take you up on it.

Thanks, Steve

Continental Xcontact and Pirelli Scorpion (NOT the ATR) are also OEM - should be available in that size? Would certainly do for a spare.

Cheers,

Gordon

I got a second hand 19 inch from British and Sweedish (N. Narrabeen Tyrepower)
You could try other yre places and see.
Anoying for you when you need only one but they are a very poor tyre so when you need a new set get something better (GG ats?)

Get them from the states...http://www.tirerack.com (http://www.tirerack.com)

2 years ago I got a set of 4 Pirelli Scorpian ATR P255/60R18 @ USD 240 each. Shipping was USD 356. Compared to Oz prices I got a trye free inc the shipping cost.

As long as the cost of goods is below AUD 1000 you wont pay GST.

Send an email to mac@tirerack.com to request a shipping quote when you have selected tyres. You can't order international on the website direct and you will need to direct transfer the money.

Recently they have been quoting silly shipping costs.
Pressure from manufacturers?

So I just ordered Scorpian ATRs 255/60/18 from Bob Jane in Cleveland for $344 each. BobJane originally quoted $400 each but Jaqx quoted $349 so Bob Jane priced matched plus 10% of difference.

Kmart wanted $395 and TyrePower would go to $339 but they are 25ks from me...

Price now matches importing from US although still $100 more per tyre but they wanted $400 shipping.

l fitted 5 Bridgstone D697's last month and have a new OEM wrangler that has never been on the road - still has paper specification sticker on tread. l'm in the Western surbubs of Sydney if your interested in a deal.

The local price gouging depends on the brand. For instance, Yokohama Geolandar AT-S in 265/60R18 are over $430 locally... yet Tirerack have them for about US$167 last time I looked.

Hi, interested to read your post about your GY tyres.

I have just bought the DS SD SE. Mostly pleased. BUT in the space of four weeks managed to tear/rip the tyre wall on two separate tyres both on the NSF.

Yes, they were pinched when clipping a curb but no I don't think in the circumstances they should have ripped rendering them unroadworthy or repairable.

I have raised the issue with the dealer (Trivett Alexandria) who are sceptical of my claim but say they will oblige my request to raise it with the Goodyear rep.

Never in my driving career of 20 years have I experienced this in similar circumstances, and am wondering whether the issue is common with these tyres especially since they are OEM. I never replace OEMs on any vehicle. I find them to be overpriced and of poor quality. And to your point, they didn't have any in the country in any event.

Grateful for any further insights or experience you may have had raising the issue with GY or JLR.

Thanks.

The standard OEM Good Years really are very ordinary tyres that wear out in no time at all and from many reports in here are prone to damage. I brought a very low kilometre set off of Redback and put them on our sons Ssyangyong Rexton and they were down to the canvas in 20,000 kilometres. I replaced them with Hankooks which I know from experience will last at least 50,000 klm.

Last 2 sets of tyres have been the Pirelli Scorpion Zero which isn't really an off road tyre but has lasted me very well. I do virtually no off road, occasionally might take it on the beach.
Get about >50,000km over 3 years from last 2 sets.

Considering the Pirelli Scorpion Zero Asimmetrico as it has better wet weather performance for my next set.

Soon will be time to do the ring around on price $$ in Brisbane as I am almost on the wear ridges. About 1mm left . . .

Hi Pete,

I tried a set of 18" Scorpion Zero's on the D2a. They were noisy and didn't ride that nice and wore quite quickly. As crazy as this might sound the El cheapo 20" Nitto A/T's that I have on the D4 are quieter than the Pirelli's, ride well and are wearing a treat.

Have tried a few brands now.

The manglers rode ok but noises and did not last long. Had 3 sets under warranty. First set only lasted 10 thou

Next were continentals. Forget the type but mainly a road tyre. Very quiet and lasted ok. Very poor cornering.

I've been quite happy with the pirellis so far. Yes a bit noises and especially when you get a bit of use on them. The wranglers were very noisy.

Always stayed clear of cheaper brands but always open to options.
I don't do a lot of kms anymore so hoping to sneak through till November or December and get some then. Needs new shock/airbag assemblies so will do all in one go. And wheel align too!!

To be fair to the Wrangler they:

Aren't really that noisy.
Do stick pretty well in both wet and dry.
Don't adversely affect your fuel economy.
However ;) ....

They are not very strong and are almost wobbly once you have driven on another brand of tyre.
Are super puncture prone from ... well what I thought was around 40K klms ... but the new car has had two punctures in about a month on tyres that have barely 20K klms on them.
And ..... are freakin expensive for what they are not.
I'm already trying to work out what to fit next .... which is pretty sad at 26K klms.

I'd never do Scorpion ATRs again though .... scary in the wet in my old D4.

Consider General Grabber!

They are an underrated tyre IMHO. After 55,000 of throwing anything at them, some minor small cuts. They have done exceptionally well given the load and terrain I have covered.

BJ sells them for $330 fitted....
