If you are referring to the damper on the diffs.. Then yes, you can just remove them.

this one is located forward of the handbrake drum on the back of the transfer case.

Same... Unusual for that one to fail..

Remove, see how it goes - it does soak up quite a bit of NVH...

I'd be finding one from a Salvage yard.

usually they just come loose where they are attached to the 4 studs. Just nip up the 15mm nuts.

Yep. I would keep that one, I have found it makes a difference and does meed to be kept. I removed the one on the rear diff and it was fine.

Mine shook itself off when the vehicle was about two years old. It made an almighty noise as it bounced along under the vehicle, tethered by its cable. I just cut the cable and never bothered to replace it. I can't tell the difference, and the vehicle still runs, although the rear diff is quite noisy.

The other equipment that left the vehicle of its own volition were the rear disc protectors. Again, shocking noise when they flapped around until I freed them. I replaced them once, but the same thing happened again so I haven't bothered. Again, things seem fine without them.

All in all, less unsprung weight on the rear axle, and that can't be bad.

Hi outback1. Would you mind taking a pic of the harmonic damper your talking about as I don't think my d2 has one.
Cheers
