Diesel Gas Tank Size (TD5 Defender)

Hi all,

Currently looking into getting LPG for my TD5, not for the fuel savings, but for the extra power. I dont want to start an argument as to whether it is worth it or what ever. I am just interested in those that have had the conversion done. What i would like to know is where you had the tank mounted and of what size, including any modifications that needed to be done to fit it in. I do not want it in the cab, the the only place i get fit the tank is the drivers side, in between the outrigger and the radius arm bracket. Most installers have told me they can fit a 32l tank (25l usable), but this would mean having to fill up with LPG twice to one tank of diesel.

I haven't done a TD5 Deefer but if the floor is the same as a TDi and County then you can purchase a Manchester tank, 260mm diameter 710mm long, that carries 27 litres of LPG that doesn't hang below chassis level. If you are willing to lose 10mm ground clearance, Blue LPG have a 270mm diameter by 750mm long tank that carries 32 litres of LPG (40 WC)

Thanks for the reply, i was hoping to get the blue LPG 40l (WC) tank, but if the tank is 750, then with the addition of the end fill, it will not fit. So i am looking at the blue LPG which is 270 by 615 (31l WC), it is a shame about the wasted space. I would consider the manchester tank, but as the defender is used for not for profit research, blue LPG has agreed to provide financial support.

Here is a picture with the dimensions of the space under the drivers seats.

On the D1/RRC chassis I used to fit a 203mm diameter by 820 long end fill cylinder by spacing the tank brackets out from the chassis a bit. The valve guard can be trimmed to miss the front outrigger. You may be able to skew your tank slightly to fit the longer one in no probs. Also the parallel section of a 750mm tank finishes at least 50mm from each end, ie it may miss your front locating arm bracket nicely with no more than 20mm clearance off the chassis.

Ask Blue LPG for an overall length including a view of the depth of the valve guard. Unfortunately I didn't photograph the one Blue LPG end fill tank I fitted.

I have LPG on my discovery TD5 it filsl between 17 and 22 liters depends on the ambient temperature. I have it starts at 1500 rpm then max gas at 2000 rpm full boost, and goes to no gas at 3500 rpm to protect the engine mine is diesel gas Australia.

A tank lasts about 400-500 ks depends how I drive it, (I do have lots of different mods) cruising due to the set up it burns a lot a gas.
Mine is set for most power, but still gets about 500 ks to half a tank of diesel around town.
As for tank size I would like a bit bigger around 30 lites would be ideal. I do fill up twice per tank of diesel with gas $13 each time.

Hello,
There is a ratio as how much gas is injected into the motor to be at its peak, I have never put mine on a dyno, sorry can't supply a figure, there is a big difference when it is running and how the motor rev's when on LPG. Mine is set to the higher range more for power than economy . It is on the to do list.
Currently my break time is taken up finishing my building my boat, once finished I can get back doing the car.

I have lpg on my td5. D2 with airbag suspension have longer radius arms than with coils, so the cylinder would not fit in the normal position directly under the drivers seat floor. The cylinder is mounted inboard of the chassis rail with the exhaust adjusted sideways for clearance. With normal driving the 23l tank lasts a tank of diesel.
