Hiya fella and fellaretts
My employer has given me a choice of phones for work, they're paying and they gave me a handful to choose from, i have boiled their list down to these 3:
A.) iPhone 5
B.) HTC One XL
C.) Sony Experia
I am hoping for some practical day to day advice from such a practical bunch of people like yourselves!
:D

Apples aren't the world beaters they once were. I have kept my 4 rather than upgrade to a 5. I don't like iTunes either.
If you have any computer skills consider an Android phone. If you are a basic user go iPhone they are easier to use. Some phones are too big these days too.
Windows phones integrate well with MS Office on your PC but there are less apps.
Very subjective choice though so go what you like.

I have the Iphone 4S as a work phone and have just bought the Sony xperia Z. I went to Telstra to get another 4s as a private phone and they talked me into the Sony.
The Sony has rave reviews on the internet and the week that I have had it I wish the work phone was a Sony, They are great! It is actually cheaper than the Iphone too and has more features. The best things so far are the 13 megapixel camera, Full HD Video. This hasn't been a big selling point for me but I have to say it takes stunningly clear crisp photos. Quiet amazing. The Sony also goes to 4G for faster internet where available. The signal strength is much better than the Iphone (both on Telstra Next G), The sony has the Blue tick for best signal where as the Iphone does not.
I get frustrated using Itunes trying to download things to the Iphone and the Sony is just a plug and play like an external hard drive.
The major upside for me was the big screen on the sony. This may not be an upside for some people but it makes life so much easier. The biggest downside has been that since it is so new there are limited cases available. I want a case that I can throw the phone and it will be fine, but there are none available at the moment. I think Otter are going to be turning some out soon though. The Sony is Dust proof and water resistant.
I had an HTC Mozart once. It was rubbish.
My vote would be Sony first by a country mile, Iphone a very distant 2nd and then a Potato third. :D

Gillie, I'm nearly sold on the Sony, but I do have a iphone 4 for personal use, so i do like them.. :D
Now that you've had the sony for a bit, how do you find the battery life compared to the 4s?

The Sony Battery life is much better. In saying that, it doesn't get the same use as the work phone Iphone 4S which only lasts 3/4 of the day. The Sony has some power management application where you can isolate things that suck power etc. There is a good write up here Sony Xperia Z Review | Pocketnow (http://pocketnow.com/2013/03/13/sony-xperia-z-review) On the Xperia Z.
I believe the Sony Xperia Z smartphone features 11 hours of talk time and 550 hours of maximum standby time. I don't know if this true but I haven't bothered with the power settings on mine and it after a day it sits around 60 or 70% battery.
Keep us informed which way you go.
I quiet liked the Iphone and that is what I was going to buy but they kept raving about this Sony Xperia Z. Honestly, It is so much better than the Iphone. I have had Android before and wasn't impressed but they have come leaps and bounds since then.

Interestingly both reviews from your link say it struggles to give 6 hr battery life ???
Like the dust/water features but the heat issue is a concern.

You should look at one of the new Nokia Lumina range.

I have an iPhone 5 for my work phone
Love it and third iphone I had had.
But one thing I like about the apple is we have iPads for work too so both of them are sync together which makes life a lot easier. Soon as I make a note in the iPad it is on my phone and same with a lot if things on the iPad and iPhone.
So as a phone it may not be the best but as a package with the iPad it is great work tool.

I have an older HTC and I'm not about to upgrade it. I can get an iPhone any time I want, but not going to bother. Biggest reason for me is the hands free in the car. The whole sales team drive base model dunny doors and the iPhone is crap through the hands free on these where the HTC is awesome.
I am an Apple fan, and everyone else in the house has an iPhone, but due to this one reason, I've stuck to the HTC. I can be on the phone for hours each day, so it makes my life easier. Battery life on mine is great, but not sure what the newer ones are like.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Nothing beats some real world advice...
Think I've decided to go with a Sony, just because of the flexibility over the iphone, and I've heard a couple of bad reports on HTCs around the place.
Pretty keen on the waterproof bit too
