converting nato plug to 7 pin round

Hi all,

I recently acquired a no.5 trailer and want to convert the nato plug to 7 pin round.

I have done some research but all I could find is Letters corresponding to coloured cables numbered up to 12. see below.




[Pin A] Red/Brown = wire #1 = Convoy = not used on 12N
[Pin B] Green/Purple = wire #2 = Stop = Pin 6 / Red
[Pin C] Red/Brown = wire #3 = Convoy = not used on 12N
[Pin D] Black = wire #4 = Earth = Pin 3 / White
[Pin E] Red/Orange = wire #5 = Tail = Pin 5 (RH Tail/Brown) & Pin 7 (LH Tail / Black)
[Pin F] Red/Yellow = wire #6 = Fog = Pin 2 / Blue
[Pin H] Red/Brown = wire #7 = Convoy = Not used on 12N
[Pin J] Green/Purple = wire #8 = Stop = Pin 6 / Red
[Pin K] Purple = wire #9 = Aux = Not used on 12N
[Pin L] Black = wire #10 = Earth = Pin 3 / White
[Pin M] Green/Red = wire #11 = LH Indicator = Pin 1 / Yellow
[Pin N] Green/White = wire #12 = RH Indicator = Pin 4 / Green

A,C & H are joined together, as are B & J and D & L

K auxiliary is a permanent 12v feed, but a triler won't need that (unless you plan to have some work lights on it, or run a fridge etc)


Trouble is the cable from the trailer only has 10 wires within it. There are 9 white cables numbered 1-9 and a green/yellow cable.

Anyone know which wire does what?

Three ideas for you..
1-If the NATO plug is still on it you should be able to work from each pin to the numbered wire.
2-Can you see what the numbers are at the light end?
3-Once the earth is found put power down the wires to see what lights up.

I'm tipping the green/yellow core is the earth.

I've cut the plug off and still have it so I could pull it apart to work it out, or try your other suggestions but I was kind of hoping someone would already have the info.

I was pretty sure the yellow and green was earth but best to get confirmation.

No.5 is alive, well at least wired for lights.

Nato yellow/green = Earth
Nato white wire one = left blink
Nato white wire two = brake light
Nato white wire three = tail light
Nato white wire four = right blink
Nato white wire five = reverse

Nato white wires six through nine were not used on this trailer.

Hi Gav,

mainly intend to use as a general purpose trailer for firewood collection and camping gear (kids bikes etc.)

But I have to sort out the hitch first. I borrowed Easo's pintle hook/mount combo to get it home but it fouls the swing away wheel carrier. :mad:

Using a straight pintle hook into the receiver will be to low and using a typical pintle mount means it fouls the wheel carrier. Might have to try a combination of pintle hook on smaller mount and either alter the draw bar so it is lower, or raise the axle above the springs or both.

I'll see about a pic tonight but most probably have to wait until the weekend.

I was trying to wire new LED tail lights and blinkers onto a No. 5 today but found the plug on the trailer was the reverse of what it should have been.

Hard to explain but if you look at the top two pins on the socket on the Perentie, the LH one is pin A, the RH one is pin J.

So, looking at the matching plug, the LH pin should be pin J and the RH pin is pin A.

However, the plug on the trailer had LH one as pin A, the RH one as pin J. I didn't notice this for some time as nothing seemed right.

In the end, I noticed it, pulled the plug out of the casing and found really dodgy soldering (not original), the wrong plug, the numbered wires (all white) didn't match the pin outs shown in the first post above). When checking the lights, power didn't appear on any of the numbered wires (at the other end of the cable) where I expected it to be.

Gahhh! No wonder I was getting confused and thoroughly frustrated. The owner wants to keep the original cable and plug otherwise I'd have tossed the heavy cable and started again by replacing it with normal trailer cable.

I now have the correct plug and will rewire it properly tomorrow,

I sorted it out in light of day.

The plug that was on the trailer had been bastardised by someone (probably in the Army). All the pins had been removed and put back in from the opposite side hence the back to front labelling.

I cut off the plug, refitted the pins and rewired it.

Re the cable, the wires are in sequence 1 to 8 then black, then green/yellow (the latter is the same as the earth wire in mains wiring) for a total of 10 wires.

Because this plug was modded and another I had access to had the wires cut short, I had to go my own way with wire number allocation. It shouldn't matter as, at the other end, the terminal block has been dumped and the wiring extended by normal trailer wiring to the lights. That gets rid of possible poor connections.

The trailer now has LED lights. The convoy lights have been removed. It will be at the Expo on Sunday (sitting behind and matching Aust Frontline Machinery's 110).
