View Full Version : Puma sealed air intake kit for Safari Snorkel

Sadly, fitting a snorkel to a Puma does not guarantee safe water crossings as the original ducting from the back of the snorkel to the air filter box is just push together plastic.

No sealant, not clamp….hardly a sealed system.
Even worse at the air filter box end where this pipe is just a poor friction fit.

Now there is a solution with Nugget Stuff’s replacement kit. Comprising a replacement air box which screws onto the inner guard and an adaptor for the air filter box end allowing the 2 to be connected with a 90mm flexible hose which is clamped in position.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2013/04/349.jpg (http://s290.photobucket.com/user/hma03/media/nugget%20stuff/nugget%20stuff%20air%20box/airbox04-22-13006.jpg.html)
The air filter box adaptor and replacement air box are moulded from tough polyurethane. The air box lid and body are sealed by O ring to ensure an airtight seal.

The kit contains all components and takes 2-3 hours to fit. Currently the kit is suitable for Safari snorkels only. A TJM Airtec kit is under development.
Kit price is $135 plus $15 freight and is available by contacting me by PM or from Mulgo.

G'day Nugget, will this fit on the factory fitted LR unit as well?
On inspection of mine the other week whilst we were away revealed a crack in the box inside the inner guard :(

I'll have a look but I have already put a fair investment making moulds to suit the Safari and Airtec (still arranging kit). Cheers

PM Sent but thanks for taking the time to develop this, I know Drover and I were quite keen for you to do it and I cant wait to get my hands on it. I think a very reasonable price too as I know how much time you have put into it.

Hi Nugget,
Very interested!
Do you know if the kit would fit the Mantec Snorkel?

Hi Scott,
Do not have the answer right now as I developed it for the Safari on my truck.
I have a LR snorkel coming on loan from my LR dealer to see if I can answer your question. Will let you know.

Hey Nugget, as per normal - more high quality work :BigThumb:
I would love to just get the adaptor from the flexi tube to the air box.
I currently have the flexi tube attached directly onto the snorkel with an alloy adaptor plate and it works really well, but the join to the air box is a bit ordinary.
What have you done to seal the air box lid, IMO this one of the most vulnerable area on the whole system.
A friend has a Pootrol with a Safari snorkel, if he puts a plastic bag over the snorkel head the motor will suffocate and stall. My PUMA just hesitates for a moment and just keeps on running. I blame the seal of the air box lid.
Have you tried this type of test ? If so what results did you get ? I guess it is only way to fully test the whole system 100%.
Your thoughts
Grant.

lol - as long as the car does not try to ingest the plastic bag that's a brilliant test

I test mine by taking off the snorkel head and placing a piece of ply over the hole. Some designs may have holes in the side that need to be sealed up first?
This would be a good test for all owners to do whose snorkels were fitted by the manufacturer (ARB/TJM etc...)

Pretty sure the LR/Mantec will work. Scallops has had one fitted to his truck. Just waiting to contact the guys who fitted it to see if they had to do anything special/tricky with the clips.

Some great news for those with Mantec snorkels.
Yesterday we fitted a system to knodes85 truck which already had a Mantec fitted and all went well.

It’s a very well designed and engineered piece of kit (unlike the original LR air intake system / colander). Pretty simple install, especially when Nugget’s doing all the work!

Nugge t,
Any chance of some pics of your kit to seal the Mantec?

The kit fits on the inside of the guard and seals from there to the air filter box. It is the oridinal ducting which is replaced by the kit.
The Mantec is fitted on the outside of the guard and is sealed as per the Manted fitting instructions.
If you require any additional or more specific information, please drop me a line.

Fitted the kit to my MY12 D90 with Mantec Snorkel yesterday and all is well. It now has a definite intake growl. I like it a lot. I didn't need to remove the inner guard. I managed to squeeze it, on the right angle, through the fake intake on top of the guard.

I am definitely getting better fuel economy. I would say about 10%. I have always been a little disappointed with the 2.2 fuel economy so I am very happy.

This may seem a stupid question, but can it be fitted without removing the Mantec RAI? I have sikaflexed mine onto the body to seal it and would rather not have to remove it and clean it all up if I don't have to.
cheers

G'day Pat,
You would need to remove the Mantec as the air box screws on using the existing holes in the guard which must be done from the snorkel side of the guard.

The question has been asked if fitting one of my Sealed Air Intake sytems affects warranty.
The short answer is no, as long as it does not adversly affect a genuine part which is caused to fail as a result. this how my dealer has explained it to me :-
"
This is a common misunderstanding amongst the general public.
Fitment of an aftermarket accessory to a vehicle does not void the entire warranty.
Warranty is only affected if the failure of a genuine component that would normally be warranted is caused by the failure / fitment of the aftermarket component.
For example – if the sealant used in the air box was not sensor safe and caused failure of the intake system sensors then they would not be warranted.
That doesn’t mean that if a water pump started leaking it wouldn’t be covered under warranty being that it’s a totally unrelated system.
Hope this makes things clearer for you."
I fitted my own unit sealing it with a commercial silicon sealer and had no trouble at all. My investigations have also advised that it is extremely unlikely that there would be any problem but to reduce the probability to zero, I am going to include a tube of Sensor Safe sealant with all future kits. Unfortunately it increases the price of the kits a bit, but it is better to be safe than sorry.
Cheers

Thanks for the info Wayne.
Its still on my wish list, as mine has a split in it :(, so I expect they'll fix that when its next into them, maybe I can get them to agree to use yours :D, but otherwise, it has to wait till the funds are available to do it myself.

trying to install this on A MY13 but the hose seems to be jamming up against the bottom of the brake booster and resting on the steering knuckle. Everytime we try and move it it scrapes plastic of the hoses. any ideas?

ended up sliding some rubber sheeting between the hosing and the brake booster so hopefully that'll holdup. Had a little momentary set back trying to put the mantec snorkel back on but that is now solved.. and now the snorkel is vibrating with power! it fairly grumbles even in idle, you can hear the air being sucked in and if you put your hand near the intake you will feel the vacuum.
nice bit of kit nugget.

Would be great to see before & after dyno & fuel figures, although there seems no doubt there are significant improvements on the induction side.
Nugget what's your preferred RAI after all your work, or are they same same

Hi guys..sorry only just seen the posts.
Not sure why you had trouble rutmutt without seing a pic but sounds like you got it sorted.
I have fitted Safari snorkels previously and have always been happy. I know the one on my 110 took a hell of a bashing from tree branches etc and it held up very very well.

Will it fit on an Airtec snorkel?

10th May 2014, 04:31 PM
I can confirm that Nuggets kit will fit where an original LR snorkel is used.
I fitted Nuggets kit to our 110 a few weeks ago and it fits fine.
Nugget, if you have a look at your old emails you will see some feedback I provided at the time, but it seems to me to be a good installation.

Rob

Yes it can be fitted with an Airtec. I supply a couple of longer stainless steel studs for the snorkel and it is a bit more fiddly but certainly can be done. Witchdoctor fitted one to his 90.

I had the same issue with rubbing against the steering knuckle, I followed the pictures with regards to the cable ties.
I drilled a hole an inch or so North and it moved it all up past it and now all is well.
Very well made and easy to fit

I am half way through fitting mine, but I am stuck...
How does the adaptor fit with the standard air box?
I can slide the slotted section into the air box, but then the hose can't fit the adaptor. It will not fit the airbox (that I can see) the other way around...
Any tips?

got mine, installation was super easy, only lost one plastic thingy for the guard liner.
but far out getting the standard LR intake pipe out was the biggest waste of time ever.
also i don't see why this kit would work with any side mount snorkel, the snorkel shouldn't effect the the bits you get with kit?
least it didn't look like it could when i put my safari on.
awesome product Mr Nugget!

No worries, sh*t happens.
I got it all finished tonight, and it is a decent bit of gear!
I look forward to your new and improved air filter box (HINT).
