View Full Version : Window washer woes

Okay folks.
For a while I've had intermittent issues with my windscreen washers.
Today I bit the bullet and started pulling it apart.
Worked out that somewhere in between the first connection from quarter panel to bonnet and the washers, the flow is blocked.
Great!
Except I promptly broke the non return valve fitting and both the jet connectors, they were amazingly brittle.
Okay, not much I can do about that, time for some new ones.
Any ideas on what sort of stupid costs land rover will charge me for some new ones?
Next part, the rear washer.
It had been working as usual, then it stopped. Plenty of water in the reservoir.
Arm moves as normal, but no water.
Off came the rear door trim, now I'm just looking for ideas on what to check.
Handy Hint: Use a pair of scissors slightly open, with the blades on either side of the trim clips.
I broke three with a screwdriver and sharp knocks, broke zero using this system, saves having to buy the tool
Cheers

Muppet.
I recently had the same problem with the minister for war and finance's car. A hose had chafed through letting out the water very slowly. I fixed the problem by re plumbing the system with plain old aquarium air line that I had a heap of lying around. The Volvo had a huge in line filter that I left out, I think it acted as a kind of non return valve as well. Now there is a small pause until the h2o comes out. May be more of an issue with the D2 if your off road with a windscreen covered in mud though. Then you could try some (again) aquarium non return valves ( the sort that allows you to place the air pump below the water line to prevent back siphoning). Never tried it but it could work. Cheap fix too.
Regards
Robbo

The washer jets are about $23 each and the hose which includes the non-return valve is about $22.

If you're feeling really cheap, you should be able to get those kind of parts from the UK cheap. Being that they're not critical engine components, I have no problem with cheap after market versions. But that's up to you.
I recently bought a new washer pump for my County. $116 from LR dealer. $16 from ebay UK. It's not genuine, but for a windscreen washer pump I couldn't care less....(unless it breaks next week).

Windscreen washers on a county?
Isn't that just your passenger hanging out the window with a paper towel? :p

Apparently LR Australia has substantially dropped the list price of a lot of products recently. It's worth checking as the price differential to UK pricing can be small enough that it disappears in the shipping charges.

Thanks for the tip.
TBH if I want parts ASAP (genuine or other), my go to place seems to be Karcraft in Sydney. Their prices are very good, express postage always gets me parts the next business day and they have almost everything you can imagine in stock. (Haven't had anything out of stock yet).

I've had a look at online prices, when you factor in freight it's about a dollar different.
I have to pick up my new airfilter anyway, might as well hand over some more money :p

My discovery had what looked like rubber stuck just prior to the jet, I think it might be green sludge compressed down.

As Sheryl Crow says:
If it makes you happy, it can't be that bad.
What good is having money if you can't get some enjoyment out of it? :)

If your game to steal a butter knife out of the kitchen drawer this is the tool for you.
just cut off 3/4" from the end of the knife cut it square to the blade
cut a notch 1/4' wide X 3/8" deep and sharpen the end with a 3/16" taper on the flats, leave a blunt end about 10 though is enough so it doesn't cut the trim.then bend it in the vice (see foto)
if your not game to pinch one, the local Salvo's store sell knives for 20cents
a good solid one is best.
a light push on the trim allows the remover tool to go under the button, then just lever up and out they pop,
I made mine to remove the roof lining,Lots of buttons in that job no broken ones.

Or Autobarn has kits or tools, just moulded FRP, but strong enough. 5 different shapes/profiles to cover everything on a D2. About $24-
