View Full Version : Running 255/85 16 tyres with front runner aux tank

Has anyone managed to run 33inch tyres with a front runner aux tank in the rear guards?

I have read comments that it will foul but if so by how much? It looks like it will be a tight fit at full articulation but my current (worn) tyres seem to have more than half an inch clearance.

Any comments appreciated.

Watching with interest....

Edit, we talking the rhs fuel tank or the lhs water tank?

When I approached Opposite Lock in Toowoomba to buy one of these tanks the owner (who owns a defender), strongly advised against it due to the fouling issues. In the end I went with sill tanks.

I have 255/85/16's KM2's and the tank, it does not rub under normal load, however when I did a trip across the Simpson, it rubbed when I hit a hole and bottomed out, only the once though and it was a big bang, just came too fast down a dune and unfortunately there was a dip at the bottom.

It was fully loaded with 3 people, roof top tent and all the other stuff you need to carry, my rear speakers got killed and the plastic jerry's with water ruptured, just to give you an idea of the scale of the hit.

I have air bags to put in the rear, hopefully that may stop it, but that said there was no damage or dents, only noticed as the paint on the tank is rubbed off where it touched.

cheers

Assume this is the rhs fuel tank?

Yep.

Whilst I don't have one (for this reason), I know others that have had and subsequently removed them due to fouling when fully loaded - arguably when you need it most!

My solution was to use the Long Range Automotive 147L tank.

Thinking I might be better off with smaller diameter tyres. The car allready has the tank and I do frequent long distance trips fully loaded including yearly Simpson crossings. It's a shame though the 255's look the business on a defender...

Had an issue with fouling in a Td5 defender with 255/85's. Dolium were VERY good about it, and I would imagine they have sent out a note to there distributors to this effect. The owner eventually had his tank modded to suit the tyres and all is well. When we contacted them about the problem they were very grateful to hear about it.
