View Full Version : td5 timing chain pressurising

Twice in the last 200km I've had the camshaft cover/access plate on the front of the engine blow off. I assume its because this part of the engine (timing chain) is pressurising.
A bit of background - 2000km ago I gave up trying to get a rocker cover gasket to fit & seal & redid it with silicone gasket goo. 2000km later the cover blows off, I replace it & 50-100km later it happens again. The rocker cover breather is clear. It was suggested that I had blocked the passage between the timing chain area & camshaft area so the breather wasn't relieving pressure around the timing chain. HOWEVER the second time it blew off was after I'd removed an area of gasket goo between the 2 areas so I'm totally baffled (& rather upset - SWMBO is making noises about me getting something else)
Any help appreciated
Alex

If the cover "blew" off your engine is stuffed. The breather from the rocker cover to the intake pipes must be going like a compressor, dipstick should be popping out also and I honestly doubt the engine would run if there is enough pressure to "blow out" the cam cover.
The sealing between camchain and rocker cover isnt the problem.
Most likely the plug is damaged, wrong size(aftermarket) wrong O ring fitted.
It should be quite a tight fit.

How much crank case pressure do you have?

Maybe its rattling out, not blowing out. The dipstick stays in, the engine runs fine, the replacement cover was a bearmach, labelled with the correct LR part number (LRI100030).
There is no oil in the coolant or milkiness in the oil, so I don't think the head gasket is the issue. It wasn't using or losing oil prior to this, and I know where the coolant loss is - drain plug not sealing fully.
Based on this I'm still baffled.

The Bearmach cam cover plugs are total junk.

When I first got my d2 I had a leaking cam cover plug, which was replaced with a Bearmach item on the basis that these were a quality part. Less than 10 months down the track the plug was leaking again and so loose in the head it was you could rattle it back and forth with a finger and it basically popped out with a fingernail under the edge.

I replaced with a LR part which was fairly difficult to push into place to install. When I did the head at easter I had to lever the cam plug out with a screw driver.

cheers

Thanks - I'll see if I can source a genuine one. BTW the BM plug was very hard to push in the 1st time, but when it blew I recovered & refitted it with silicone, went in much easier & came out again fairly soon (lost it that time)

If that is even possibly true I'll carry out my plan to fit a metal strut over the front of the plug to hold it in place. Thanks:)

With a good new O ring fitted it should be really tight.
Mine felt like it would break when I levered it out last.

They don't all come loose/out but as the O ring gets older they do leak.

Temporary fix,may work permanently.
Pull the cover out, remove the O ring and clean both.
Run several laps of teflon tape around the cover the refit the O ring.It will now fit tight.
Worked on mine for a long time before I finally bough a new O ring.
GOODLUCK

O ring replacement is easy and cheap

O-rings were pretty irrelevant for me as i had lost the entire cover. Got a new one now & fitted it with a metal strut over the front of it to ensure its held in place. Also fitted a new rocker cover gasket.:)

I may have another oil leak from the vacuum pump oil feed hose:(, but it could be I just didn't degrease this area. I'll know tomorrow after I drive it after degreasing this. It looks a bit hard to get at, but I'm sure I'll be able to sort it out.

Thanks everyone for your help:D:D Its nice to know I'm not alone, even if I'm having weird problems no-ones seen before:D

BUT the cover is into the rocker space, and if you have enough pressure to force it out then you either have a blocked crankcase ventilator or so much crankcase pressure that the ventilator is overwhelmed. I would be checking the flat thingo in the inlet manifold .

Mine at 130Kk was so loose that it was a major oil leak but it still was in place.

I've just fitted a new O ring which I sourced from CAT (part #
2N-5243) which cost $6.99. The old O ring was very hard and brittle and broke whenI tried to remove it whereas the new one is soft and flexible.

The plug fits snuggly now and should provide a decent seal.

Being EPDM it will turn to cheese soon...

A correct item: BS330 Viton

Any good bearing company will have them.
