Well after selling my D1 Disco :( im on the look out for a TD5 Discovery:o..Im new to the whole diesel thing after owning rover V8s for more then 18 years.Im looking at one tomorrow with 290 000 km on the clock.Should i be worried with this amount of km on it?
I will be checking the usual service records if it has them.If it has been well looked after could i expect to get another 100 000km out of the diesel motor? I know its a rather open ended question and many things could go wrong, but on a V8 motor i would start to become worried about those amount of km.If you see where im coming from.:D

I have done alot of research about what to look for in the D2 Diesel but any other info would be great before i go and check it out tomorrow night. Are there any things i should ask? Im looking forward to joining the diesel club:p and the fuel economy improvement:angel:.
And no doubt i will be lurking in the D2 area more often.
Cheers
Chris

There are plenty with higher kms and still trouble free. With some luck at though km's most of the problems that cause issue may have been changed by then. If it has a good history then you could get a bargin.

There is always a chance of something going wrong at any km's. I got mine at 316000km and although the engine runs sweet the cluch failed and took out the gearbox. It's not just the engine doing the km's the rest of the running gear ages too.

You can get some great buys out there though and I factored the chance of having to do repairs in. Working on the car is a good way to get to know it.

Thanks for that Dave.I guess it's good to hear first hand from an owner.I'm new to the whole diesel thing so I'm learning as I go.Hope you get yours sorted soon mate. And no doubt I'll be asking lots of questions.
Cheers

At 290K's and good service history the motor should be no problem as long as it has not been overheated.
Only thing I would be concerned about is if an auto what condition is it in?
The HP22 are known to give problems around the 250k mark.

Hi,

I just bought a D2 (2002) TD5 manual only 3 weeks ago with 301,000 on the clock.

Only paid $6k for it but had to put some money in to fix a couple of items. It failed the roadworthy on 3 items. Brake master cylinder, low pressure return pipe for power steering and one worn rubber engine mount.

My last 5 cars have been diesel (not all landrovers either) and as others advocate that they can last for a very long time and alot higher kilometres if the services have been kept up to them.

For me it appears that its the items around the engine an not the engine itself. I can't put any authority on that though but its what I have experienced.

Hope that helps mate.

Appreciate the info guys.It is an auto I'll be looking at.What goes wrong with the autos? I've read things about them stuffing up around the 250 mark but don't know exactly what it is that stuff up.

Haha I know that! :p my main concern is the motor and auto because I haven't dealt with them before. The rest of it I'm not to worried about.I've owned a few discos now, just not a D2.Let the fun begin :D

You should love the Td5 after owning a slug of a rover v8:p . I have owned diesels for over 10 years now 2 Tdi's and 2 Td5's , I just love the Td5 you should ever love the Td5 if it has been treated right or hate it if its been neglected:cool:

Good luck with the choice;)

Yeah thanks.I'm hoping I find one which has Been treated well:D.My rover V8 was one of the better ones.It went quite well and sounded good. Can you tell I still haven't got over selling it? :p I haven't driven a TD5 yet so I'm really curious to see how they go.I'm just looking forward to the good fuel economy.:D

I'd be a little surprised if the auto was still alive at 290, makes it more likely it's been reco'd or replaced which is good.
Other than that go for it! :D

Well i took the Disco for a drive and i was quite surprised.I got a bit of a shock at first when i push the throttle just a little and it hardly moved:p I guess i was just use to the instant torque from the V8:D It was my first drive in a TD5 and i was quite impressed. It was quiet on the freeway and had good power delivery for a car with 290,000 on the clock.

The only thing that concerned me was there was a little vibration at idle through the steering wheel. Is this normal for the diesel motors to have a bit of vibration transfer through? The auto was very smooth as well.So hopefully thats a good sign. There were no oil leaks.Just the usual weeping from hoses. And there was some good records of stuff done to it.I just maybe joining the dark side of diesel soon. :p

D2 has lots of pedal travel, you quite literally have to have a heavy foot if you want it to move anywhere quickly.
Lots of Td5s buzz at idle, mine certainly does. I'd be checking out engine mounts, they're about $300 for both and maybe a couple of hours work to replace.

Yeah i sort of figured that it had a lot of pedal travel after a few minutes.:D Other then that it was quite good.If the engine mounts are no good im hoping the roadworthy guy will pick that up.Which would be good because the seller is sorting that out.

Interestingly, mine have been collapsed (fully) since I bought it.
Not on their way out, well and truly shagged.
Weren't even mentioned on roadworthy, yet I've seen others pinged for it.
Best of luck :)

The auto will be towards the end of its life, they just wear out. Maybe it has only done country miles which would mean less gear changes and I guess less wear,

My Td5 D2a is coming up to 200k and have been told that the auto seal into the transfer is starting to leak, the changes are not as smooth as they were at 100k but still very acceptable. I have just been a little more observant since people have said that you should start to plan for a recco slush box after 200k.

Hi SPRover
As Oxley quite rightly says above - I have had "Larry" for 6 years now, baought with about 160k on the clock. Touch wood - the motor itself has not given a moments trouble and still pulls well, no smoke etc etc at 260k. But the ancillaries that make it work have been the things to let me down:

Fuel pressure regs like to leak, fuel coolers like to leak, I'm on my 3rd starter motor (possibly because of item one in this list ;)), oil coolers degrade due to electrolysis (there's 3 different metals in that one spot :p) so using OAT coolant is a must - but it still happens :(, cam plugs like to weep - I'm sure there's some stuff I forgot . Fuel pumps are expensive and can get noisy and cavitate - especially in the heat - towards the end of their life. My 4HP22 auto was already recon'd at 160k and has been completely reliable since - but watch out for the XYZ switch.

Having said that - depending on the day - I love my Td5 - so much so I was mad enough to by a second one (manual) a couple of months ago .

DM is spot on! Your V8 had a throttle cable (I think) - Td5 is fly-by-wire and long travel, wait till you put it in Low and it gets realllllllly long and smooth!

Don't fret too much over the engine mounts if it feels a bit rough at idle. They do collapse but allegedly can't fail completely - someone please correct me on that - some claim a failed genuine mount idles smoother than a new aftermarket one.

Another possibility for the "buzz", just check all the bolts are in the acoustic shell 2 x passenger side, 1 x driver's side. I'm missing 2 on the auto at the moment and it's noticeably "buzzy" compared to the other with all bolts in.

BTW - the manual I bought has 283k on it, not far behind the car you're looking at, it's a little rough outside, but it has a full service history and runs beautifully so don't let the numbers put you off, listen to it, feel how it drives - it'll tell you where it's at...good hunting! :)

Cheers
Mike

Welcome to the D2 family. You should have kept the D1 lockers, I swapped my centres over to my D2 as they are the same.

You will have to get some pictures up when you get it. I wonder if the build thread will be as long as your last.
