Hi guys

I'm looking to have the roof of my TD5 110 defender repainted. There's a few cracks showing in the 'gutters' and where the roof pieces join. It's a traditional 2 tone paint job, epson green with white roof. The paint work everywhere else is in very good nick for it's age but the white seems almost stained in places, and is impossible to out clean the nooks and crannies.
I'm based in Melbourne and have rung around for a few quotes - all have come in at about $1000 which seems a bit steep for what I'd think (correct me if I'm wrong) was a pretty small and simple job.

On my last 110 hardtop back in the UK I did the job myself with 'coach paint' but haven't been able to find some here.
Anyone have any recommendations for auto painters around Melb that might be a bit cheaper, or even better - know where I could buy some coach paint!

Thanks

Sand it down, re-seal the gutters, prime and paint with cans?

I would consider white gloss enamel rattle cans (I've used VHT cans before with good results VHT Quick Coatâ„¢ (http://www.vhtpaint.com/products/quickcoat/) ) because the paint job of the roof does not come under scrutiny and I don't have spray gun equipment or paint brush patience.

You could take the roof off, sand it, paint it, put it back and and seal it up in a weekend fairly easily (I did this but had a panel shop do the painting). Not the quickest way to do it but it's a lot easier to sand and paint when its on the ground.

I'm sure if you did the prep your local spray shop would blow some two pack white over it for a lot less than $1000, on or off the car. A lot easier for them if it's off as well, saves masking time and finding a ladder big enough to get up there. Getting the roof to them might be a bit of a challenge :o

You can also buy most auto colours in spray cans in enamel or 2K, but I think it could be difficult to get a good finish on such a big panel, not that anyone really sees it. You also don't want to be spraying 2k without the right safety gear either.

I'd get quotes just to mask and paint and do the prep work yourself ;)

Thanks guys, will look for a preping guide and get cracking. Found a place in the UK that will ship coach paint so might even do the whole lot myself - cheaper still !

Hi Pushkin,

Just another contact for coach paint if you decide to go that way.

Paint Products to the Heritage Transport and Canal Markets - Craftmaster Paints (http://www.craftmasterpaints.co.uk/products.htm)

I knew a couple chaps in the vintage Jaguar club who refused to get their paint from anywhere else...

I imagine you will need to seal or varnish the surface for the local conditions?

Cheers,

Lou

Hi Pushkin
Dont know if you have "Spectrum Paints" where you are but I went to the one here on the Gold Coast and they have the LandRover White in their data base. Whilst I have a spray painting kit and bought 2 litres to do the roof of my old series 3 (as close to Limestone I could get and I was very happy with the match), They can mix up as much as you like in a spray can for $25.00 each.
Cheers Ian
