View Full Version : Roof Racks for a Puma 90

G'day guys,
Would somebody who has a Hannibal and Patriot rack kindly :D measure from the top of their roof to the top of the rack platform (not the side rails though) as I need a rack but only have a 2100mm garage door opening, so I have 95mm max to play with.
I have the measurements for the Rhino pioneer platform and legs, 60mm above roof line.
Im a bit unsure of which way to go now reading this thread rigidity of a welded rack, Hannibal, compared to a bit of flexibility as discussed with the Patriot.
I guess there is at least $600 + difference in price from the Rhino to the Hannibal as well, not sure on Patriot prices.
The reason for the rack is to fit a Howling Moon roof top tent/extension and awning I purchased at the Sydney Caravan/Camping show. I'll be looking at the 2m long racks and it will be on a 90. These will only be mounted when needed for a trip, day to day the rack will be bare.
Thanks
juddy

Patriot sits at 280mm
Hannibal at 260mm
Theres a big difference in price between the 2 top end racks, and the Rhino bars, but you are getting a very different product.
Both hannibal and Patriot are very closely matched, Patriot are made of a higher quality material, and have a number of Ladder options, that Hannibal don't have. Patriot are UK made ( not alot is these days ) and are backed by a life time warranty, regardless of who owns the rack. And are always in stock.
But I would happily recommend either.

Have a good look at Wind Cheetah racks made by Front Runner in South Africa. Available in Sydney from Opposite Lock outlets and Mulgo (see Roof Racks | Buy 4x4 Land Rover Toyota Nissan Accessories and Parts Online Store | Expedition Centre Australia by Mulgo (http://www.expeditioncentre.com.au/online-store/roof-rack-storage/roof-racks/)). The rack on my D90 sits at 105 mm above the roof but I have extended legs to allow me to slide a table under the rack. Standard length legs would bring the height to under 95 mm. Quite a few on the forum use them. I think they are just as good as the Hannibal racks, but a cheaper.

Just measured mine (low profile Wind Cheetah) and its 85 mm from the roof to the highest point on the frame. I have 2 dual jerry can rack bases as well as 8 adjustable tie down eyes which adds 25 mm to the overall height, but they wouldn't be part of the OP's set up...
I've traveled many thousands of km with an Easy Awn roof top tent on the predecessor of the Wind Cheetah rack (Front Runner's previous model) and IMO its a perfect platform for a roof top tent.
Having said all that, the Patriot is still the Rolls Royce of Defender roof racks. It is however reflected in the price though...

Whoa you blokes are all on the ball, I thank you all for your input.....
Well it looks like all will fit by the sound of those replies, now to whittle down to the best for me, bloody decisions.
Karlb and Loubrey did/do you have any problems with wind noise with the Front Runner/Wind Cheetah racks with the boards running across the vehicle against the Hannibal/Patriot running length wise. I was told and have read on another forum the Wind Cheatah are a bit noisy due to that.
Juddy, those measurements, are they taken from the underside of the gutter?
The patriot racks are bolt together I have seen, any dramas there or does that give the bit of 'flexibility'.

Cracka,
The reported noise from the Wind Cheetah racks are not from the lateral slats, but because people don't follow the assembly instructions.
On a 110 specifically the spacing of the legs is critical for its structural integrity, but people move them forward and back to suit door and pillar locations with the resultant flex and resonance (vibration noise).
90's on the other hand have no such issues. My low profile one is on the car all the time and I'm not even aware that its there. KarB seems happy with his as well.
All three brands have been making roof racks for many many years and are very much "fit for purpose", what ever your application.
I would personally think the bolt together arrangement is better for the significant flex in Defender bodies...
Cheers,
Lou

I have the wind cheetah as well......I probably didn't follow the instructions as I didn't fit the wind deflector that sits under the front of the rack and set the legs up to suit my awning.
When the awning is off and nothing on the roof rack it does vibrate when going 80km/hr +
As soon as anything is on the rack the vibration goes.......even a fishing rod will stop it
I tend to leave awning on so all good

The materials used in both the Hannibal and Patriot are of a different size to the Frontrunner racks too. ie the Box sections.

Ok, thanks guys thats interesting about the noise. I think the Patriot is going to be too tall.
Still doing my research now I know the heights.

just throwing my 2c in the mix.
I have no experience with the racks mentioned as they are well out of my price range.
i was able to get a tigerz11 rack (steel and around 22kgs) it was $349 and have 4 legs to it, sits about 70mm of the roof (to the top of the rack)
while the quality isnt that of those mentioned its there along side arb/ironman and it is steel not alloy, it is however silent, strong and dirt cheap. . .

Patriot sits at 280mm
Hannibal at 260mm
Juddy,
Are these distances from bottom of leg (in gutter) to top of rack (not including the luggage rail? They certainly aren't from top of roof to top of rack as requested.
From memory, Patriot has approx 40mm from top of roof (at highest point) to underside of rack and then a 50 channel for a rack deck giving a total of 90mm from top of car to top of rack.

Thanks Leroy, thats a nice light steel rack at 22 kgs.
Yorkshire Jon, yes the measurement Juddy gave was from the top of the gutter to the top of the platform (no rails). So the Patriot is 90mm top of roof to top of platform (no rails).

looking excellent. Nothing too in your face, perfect. Like the rims too.
And suits the 90 better without the top rail....

Thanks guys, yep I reckon it looks pretty good too, but I'm biased. And about 30mm spare to get in through the garage door:p
You've got mail Juddy.

Started researching roof racks in anger this weekend and had a quick question for you Cracka, Juddy or other Hannibal owners...
Would you be able to measure how far the Hannibal ladder extends down and outwards on the back of the 90? Reason I ask is we just fitted a Rijidij spare wheel/jerry can holder (awesome bit of kit btw and some pics here (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/verandah/159409-defender-dual-wheel-carrier-7.html#post1924403), thanks Murray!) and I'm interested in how much clearance we need for the ladder once the jerries are loaded. Looks like there's plenty of room but thought I better check.
Cheers.

I'll measure tonight, but I don't think it'll work once your jerries are in place.

G'day Lagerfan.
From the top edge of the gutter to the bottom of the ladder stile is 704 mm.
From the body to the outside of the stile is 116 mm.
From the body to the outside of the rung (it protrudes a little further) is 123 mm.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the quick numbers! Just been out in the dark with the measuring tape and I *think* we're all good. Based on those numbers the ladder ends before the holder starts (with about 50mm+ spare) - that's the important bit. Bottom rung would likely impact the top of a square jerry pushed flush against the carrier but there's a bit of room to move - or use tapered top cans, our current water ones are that shape.
Thanks again, need to try again in daylight and get saving for the Hannibal anyway... or a Patriot with the side ladder and problem goes away completely.

If you are struggling with the Hannibal Ladder, should be easy with e Patriot side one.
Let me know how you go one with the rear wheel carrier.

Depending on your issues, Patriot can do a Rack to Chassis, Gutter to chassi ladder, or a ladder for a double cab full length roof. Tht particular ladder bolts to a rack deck and the rear cross member but is only 25mm thick (I know, I designed it!!)

Old thread but I realised I never updated everyone on the outcome! Well the Hannibal ladder + Rijidij rear bar work like a charm, there's room to spare even. The metal can on the left is NATO spec, the plastic water jerry on the right fits with even more room to spare (when in the same leftmost position).
