View Full Version : How enthusiastically do you wave?

I just did a trip from Cairns to Brisbane and got a few waves from fellow Land Rover drivers from all makes and wondered about others waving habits.
I played the if you wave then I wave game, much to the amusement of my wife.

To put it to the test I am planning on waving to every Land Rover on my way back up to see if I get a better strike rate.

Another funny waving game i like to play with passengers is, wave to a specific make. So you might say holden, and you have to wave to every holden you see, very enthusiastically of course. Maybe i'm just easily amused, but it usually gets a laugh.

My wife finds it hilarious that I have joined the "old mans club" and she sees a Landy coming and asks if I am going to wave to my new friend.

That's fine, 1,800 km's of enthusiastic waving will be payback on the trip home. :p

As a side note I pulled in behind a disco II at the lights in Mackay, kept sight of him till Rocky, but amazingly 13 hours later watched him take the turn to the airport in Brisbane.

Growing u in the country, we waved to anyone on a dirt road, it was just something everyone did.

I wave occasionally, but other Rangie owners seem reluctant, or is that snobbish? :wasntme:

Lots of Land Rovers drive around or through Goulburn, two lots never wave, late model Range Rover owners and Defender drivers.

I work on the basis that drivers of new Range Rovers don't even know they are driving a Land Rover and Defender owners know they drive inferior vehicles to Disco's so they feel unworthy.

I'll head back to the D3/4 section now. ...;)

I started off waving to all Land Rovers - Series, Deefers, Discos, Rangies but alas I found that I only ever got responses from Series and Defenders so that's who I wave to now. Enthusiastically too - if the window's open, the arm goes out and occasionally into a big thumbs up. If the window's closed, the wave is a big full-palm wave through the windscreen and a grin like the a slightly insane Cheshire Cat.

What I HATE is when don't see someone until it's too late. I see them, they're waving at me but I don't have time to wave back as they're already past me. They must hate me an think "non-waving bugger!". Awful.

I have recently gone from a Defender to a Freelander 2. One of the biggest things I miss (apart from the joy I got every time I got behind the wheel of the Defender) is the Defender Wave.

Sadly Freelander's dont quite attract the same type of people and I'm stuck wishing I could wave as a Defender drives by. My girlfriend of course thinks the wave was ridiculous but I loved the sense of community that Defender owners have.

I hardly ever got a wave back from anyone when I had the Disco but now I've got a Defender the I get a wave back every time. I think Defender drivers just weren't expecting a wave from a Disco.

This is my experience too - I now only wave at Disco's if there's been good eye contact prior, but even then it's rare to get a wave back :( I get the impression that they think I'm mad :p

I'll always give a good wave to a Series or Defender and 99% of the time it's enthusiastically returned :D

I have never recieved a wave from any LR owner of any description, however I have never given one as I've been too worried about coming across as a wierdo!

It is an L322 thing. I waved at every LR or RR driver on the way back from Melbourne in the new Vogue and didn't get anything in return. In my old classic I usually get a pretty good response.

I wave to every LR when I am driving the D3. On average I reckon I get about 2 out of every 10 wave back. Very rare that someone else initiates, but occasionally it happens.

I think the problem is Land Rover's market success. Most people driving Land Rovers now days have no idea that they are driving more than just another car.

I bought my D3 because it was a Land Rover; the fact that it was the best 4x4 on earth was secondary. It seems most people now days buy a Land Rover because it stacked up the best against all the other potential purchases. Their next car is just as likely to be the new Toyota or Mazda or whatever. And they have no idea why people they do not know are suddenly waving to them when driving past. It never used to happen in their old commodore.

Driving regularly between Perth & Kalgoorlie, I find that almost nobody waves between Perth & about Southern Cross - then you'll get quite a few people wave between Southern Cross & Coolgardie. Between Coolgardie & Kalgoorlie, nobody waves unless they know your car.

Head off across the Nullarbor and quite a lot wave. Leads me to the opinion that those who wave between Southern Cross & Coolgardie have either just come across the paddock or about to head over that way.

As far as Landrovers go - I get the occasional wave from D3's / D4's, noticeably from those which have obviously been set up for touring - virtually never from the plain "soccer mum" types running round Perth. From D1's / D2's in Perth - I'd say only from those who might recognize my vehicle as being someone from this forum (and if you saw it, there's a chance that you might know whose it is ;)). In Kalgoorlie, I get quite a few waves from various model Disco's - some of them know me, some don't.

Range Rovers - never had a wave from one. Defenders - never had a wave from one unless it's someone I know.

Who do I wave to - any model Disco that look a little different to "soccer mums", especially if they look as though they might get "dirty" or otherwise travel outside the metro area a bit, Range Rovers if they wave first (hasn't happened yet :p) and Defenders - only if it's someone I recognize.

I've had a couple of good enthusiastic waves from D4's lately either travelling to or around Kalgoorlie - one of them could have been almost a mirror image of my own. I've noticed on a couple of trips recently though that I've got more waves from Jeep drivers than Landrovers. :o

Definitely see (and give) a lot more waves in the country than in Perth though. ANY LR wave in Perth is a rare event - except for someone in a nice looking green D2 who recently pulled behind me at a set of lights in the centre of the city, bipped the horn, waved, and took a photo of the rear end of mine and posted it on here within about half an hour of spotting me ... :D

As a recent Defender owner I have been rigorous in my attempts to acknowledge and wave at other Deefa owners. Sometimes vigorous, sometimes pull alongside if travelling in same direction on multillane roads and cruise together, swap poistion. Hand or similar through windscreen or simple ninety degree arm wave of window. In my district there are about 10 deefas that regularly pass each other. 99% of the time you get a wave back or they've also already started waving(hand, arm out the door etc). I've never had a Disco or Freelander, Rangie driver wave towards me so I presumed they didn't know about the ettiquette. (This is the case we're I'd rather not waste a wave if they don't know what thy're driving...) Having said that I'd say that 99% of Disco, Freelander or Rangie owners on my district drive them because of 'status' rather than a love of the marque's name or history. :)

Oh and to the bloke in the 130 in the blue mountains, nice rig

Yeah Muppet, I've seen him on three occasions. First time was about four months ago tearing up the mountain, then again about two weeks ago at Leura Woollies car park which was funny - I was wheeling the trolley back to the disco when I spotted him reversing out of his spot. I start giving him an enthusiastic thumbs up when I realised I wasn't standing next to my disco but behind a Volvo V70. I got the "I'm not waving back to you" look - then I realised my error. I took two steps sideways and gave him another which was acknowledged.

Third time was Monday just gone, We pulled up along side each other, I waved 1st, he waved back. I followed him up the mountain but lost him at Lawson after getting stuck behind traffic.

He definitely likes to get to places in a hurry and I hope he didn't get caught by the camera that was parked at Wentworth Falls that night.

Bloody nice rig indeed!

PS: I try to wave to everybody.

When driving the Series all models (even those which aren't new enough to have a green oval :p) get a wave with enthusiasm increasing for Defenders the older they get and reaching fever pitch on the odd occasion I'm lucky enough to see another Series on the road.

When driving anything else Defenders and of course Series still get waved at. Normally get a good response from Defender drivers but it's hit and miss with the rest.

If I really want waves it's a matter of taking the roof off and driving around Melbourne. Got a few extremely enthusiastic waves from different makes, started a number of conversations at traffic lights but the best was on the way down to Melbourne driving with no roof in the rain, a chap stuck his head out of an overtaking Magna with a big grin giving me the thumbs up and a friendly toot from the driver :)

When I do a road trip, Brisbane to Roma, Condamine to Sydney, Brisbane to Rockhampton, I wave at every Land Rover I see. (pointer finger or two off the steering wheel style). Generally everyone waves in the regional areas.

Most recently I travelled from Rockhampton to Airlie Beach and when passing (overtaking) a red Defender I gave them the wave, the horn and a cheesy grin. Not even sure if they knew what day of the week it was but I had a good laugh.

Yes my wife thinks it's strange which makes it even more amusing.

Getting a return wave can be pretty rare on the coastal trips and they come from all sorts. (D1, Defenders, RRS)

I generally don't wave in the cities unless someone waves first.

What is looking disappointing are the number of drivers who only wave at their own make :(. Don't believe this is in the spirit of owning a Land Rover. One in, all in.

We should all wave to each other no matter what the vehicle!
That is how it was in Australia for a long time, and so it should be today.
If we want to keep our nation at least partly sane, lets at least show some respect to all drivers and give a wave.
The old rule in my day was if a driver did not wave back they had problem.

It is like a hand shake.. If you shake a hand of a bloke that has a weak handshake you know he is trouble.
Body language is very powerful, and we as a nation have been swamped with invasions from other countries to the point where we now have debates on waving to each other on the road.

Our culture and our way of life is screwed if we go down this road of debating these natural and humane actions.

Agree with your point Flipper but it can get a little tricky on a multilane highway.

While I wave to anyone on a quiet country road, the busier the road the less I wave and the more I concentrate on keeping the Series from getting too close and personal to other oncoming vehicles.

I still never miss waving to a Defender or Series though (if my demister and wipers are working and I can see :o) even if it's across through the trees to the other side of the highway :D

I find you can judge how far away from civilisation by how many fingers you get.

100km out of town on highway = a finger.

Turn off onto a sideroad= 2 fingers.

Another 80km= a hand over the steering wheel.

Middle of BF Idaho = arm.

Waves suddenly stop altogether, and can barely get a finger in return= next town 30km.

Always wave at other defenders, even if I'm driving the work hilux, and that usually brings some quizzical looks.

Whether I wave at others is a bit dependent on where I am. Around the suburbs usually don't bother (defenders excluded) as 95% of the time there is no response. Out of the city gets better, out in the bush everyone gets a quick wave.

50 km's out of Rocky I was feeling desperate and considered waving to some Landcruisers, but common sense took over, and I chose just to deal with the rejection, perhaps tomorrow will send a wave my way.

Heaps of return waves in both Tassie and SA, enthusiastically from Series and Defenders, more restrained from others. Frequency of waves fell off as we got closer to major capitals (Hobart, Melbourne, Adelaide) but almost 100% when north of Port Augusta....

I wave to all landys from my classic, lots of late waves from defenders, discos are harder to get a wave out of, other classics give the best return rate.
lots of returned waves in the defender, but the most in the series (lots from other makes that i can only assume have a landy in the shed).

The overall tally as at today, 13 waves delivered, 1 returned. The whole car was well aware that a wave had been received.

And in the defence of one driver he was intently digging pixie dust from his nose, so I have marked him as unable to respond as he was previously engaged.

1 day to go, come on Landy Lovers :D

I have always waved to every LR. Recently I am wondering why I bother though.

Just got back from a 2 week trip to Broken Hill - Cameron Corner - Bourke loop. When touring outback you wave to all other travelers and 95% wave back. I gave a specially big wave to other Land Rovers, but hardly got a wave. I think from memory, 1 defender, 1 series, 2 discovery (1 or 2). Did not get a single wave back from the Discovery 3/4 drivers or any of the few Range Rover / RR Sport drivers. Do not remember seeing any RR Vogue, or FL or Evoque.

In total it would have been 1 in 10 who waved back. Oh, I did get one guy in a Discovery 2 who I thought was going to wave but was just picking his nose...

I am seriously wondering why I bother. Are Land Rover owners really getting that rude? Is the type of person who buys a Land Rover changing?

I don't bother waving anymore........if another driver Landy or other raises there finger and hand I will do the same.

I did a trip from Sydney up through QLD, back down through NSW to VIC, over to SA covering about 6500kms. Saw over 30 Disco's, Rangies and Defenders and waved to them all...only 3 waved back :(

I still wave to every make of Land Rover when i see one.

That could be you I wave to occationally on Andrews Rd...:D

Apologies to the guy who waved at me on a corner out near Tenterfield somewhere the other day. You came round the corner so fast and were so quick with the wave that you were gone before I had time to react.
