A frame ball joint is where I would start looking.

Very unlikely to be transfer.

I have a klunk as well. I know what it is.
The A frame ball joint that holds the rear axle in place.

My 'clunk' in the drive train ended up being worn splines at the back of the gear box main shaft (early LT77S gearbox). I changed bushes (including on the A - frame), fretted about universal joints etc etc but didn't find out what it really was until it all came to a free-wheeling, gliding halt, fortunately in town.

Then came the oil thrower modification that fitted on the back of the main shaft and presumably keeps everything nice and wet. No problems since (220,000 km).

Evidently it was a common LT77 issue that also infected the R380.

I got a nasty clunk on two separate occasions.

1 - The splines on the differential pinion shaft were loose, came from the factory like that - was loctited up and that fixed it.

2 - The splines on the drive members at the wheel ends wear out every 60,000'ks of average use unless you get heavy duty drive flanges. Those cause nasty clunks too

Scotty, is your car a td5? (I assume it is)

If so that will pretty much rule out the input gear, output shaft wear issue.

How many kms has the vehicle done? Suspension bushes changed long ago?

It varies greatly between vehicles depending on how you drive and off-road kms, etc, but if it still has the factory A-frame ball joint it's well overdue in my opinion. I did my Disco one at 140,000kms because it was clunking. Particularly noticeable going between forward and reverse gears, but taking off as well.

In saying that, at 200,000 it could be other suspension bushes too if they haven't been done for a long time or ever.

Is there a way to check the ball joint or should I just get it replaced anyway

With handbrake on and cdl in neutral, have a look under the car while you get few assistants to rock the car forward and backwards.
If it is flogged out you will see the nose of the diff moving a lot, and probably hear the clunk.
In good condition there should be very little movement

P.S
I'm on my 3rd ball joint @ 202 000 klm's

My defender has a clunk when I change gear to accelerate. Brought it into the stealers a few months ago who sat me down to say it was the propshafts; all 4 would have to be replaced ;) , material cost of $700 a pop and a full days labour for 2 men...I just drove on...mine actually seems to be the universal joints from the front prop, there is a rattle / clunk when I try to turn it by hand.

The rear prop is tight, doesn't seem to be an problem with those joints.bloody stealers...

4 propshafts??? Where were they proposing to put the extra 2? Or is yours some weird model?

You mean you don't have four!
Where did you lose them?

The more prop shafts the faster you go.

And even if there were 4 it sure as eggs ain't gonna take a full day for 2 guys to change them.

"A" frame or rear drive flanges - my guess.

Actually I assume they meant uni joints. But the jokes were too easy...

Well I suppose that strictly speaking, I have 6, it's just that they are distributed between 3 vehicles.

You reckon I should try and install a few more? :D

Generally speaking, more is better. That is what I practice in all things.
