That is a bit of a horror story isn't it! Some things make me wonder if it was looked after, but still...no one deserves that much bad luck.

I was talking to a mobile mechanic the other day who told me he services a 03 TD5 Disco which has clocked up over 800,000kms, engine hasn't been touched. This commutes between the southern highlands and Sydney daily.
Mine is on 300,000kms and I replaced the head gasket, radiator and all hoses as a PM measure. The rest of the engine and all the drive line untouched - just pads and a set of rotors.
They aren't all bad, service them and fix any issues early and don't allow the engine to overheat.
My daughter's father-in-law has had a replacement engine and later an overhauled gearbox etc etc in his 2001 Troopie under 300,000kms on the clock. It does get a hard time though.

Oh What a Lemon....Landcrusiser 200 (http://www.ohwhatalemon.com/)
Which one is worse? Probably the one you actually own if your unlucky enough to be saddled with a lemon.

i agree that there are good and bad ones, however i think in some cases bad ones are made worse by bad mechanics

Oh dear. Sounds much like my boys LC200 with constant back and forth to Toyota and them denying any problems.
Oil consumption put down to it being a 'hi tech engine" and no drive after a week standing while he's at work, down to whatever they thought of at the time.
Eventually they hired a Pajero (presumably an inter department deal) at
3.5K per month while they fixed the heap of crap.
I think it took about 8 or 9 weeks and a new gearbox plus much fiddling with the engine and now it's fine.......
We'll forget the 7 grand it cost to up rate the suspension so it was legal to tow his boat and load the thing up with scuba gear etc.
I think I might stick with a Deafener!

No matter what brand that some people may get into, they will attract trouble.

Td5's have alot more issues than most though, let's not pretend it's not the case
Oil pump bolt
Timing chain gemstones
Oil in loom
Exhaust manifold
Head gaskets/heads
Fuel cooler
Just off the top of my head

That site has been around for years. I remember seeing it circa 2005-6 when I got a D1. Its unfortunate that some people had that experience, but its the nature of the beast. Humans make it, so it will fault, and spouting on about second hand purchases....well, what do you expect.

Td5's have alot more issues than most though, let's not pretend it's not the case
Oil pump bolt (happened on how many? I have 200k and no issue.)
Timing chain gemstones (what is the issue here?)
Oil in loom (service item, replace if it becomes and issue)
Exhaust manifold (not an issue unless you start remapping the ECU, even then it is easy to fix))
Head gaskets/heads (all aluminium heads don't like overheating, I hope your not going to start of plastic dowels etc.)
Fuel cooler (yes they can develop a leak, once again replace on failure, it is not a catastrophic event)
Just off the top of my head
just a bit of trolling perhaps?

Well, just went to the Glasshouse tracks, asked my TD5 disco to do some difficult 4WD' ing, the only weak link in the chain was me, the chain held firm , because the vehicle was strong, all naysayers can get stuffed, they are just a bunch of *******, IMO. :D Bob

I love those in denial, they are all quite common faults, I don't wear rose colored shades;)
Good jiggers, but these issues are best sorted preventively
3 mates with td5's have had timing chain tensioners let go, the 4th sold his after we had rectified some of the issues, but then the dual mass flywheel fell apart, so he sold it
I'm sure chris can take what he wants from my advice

A lot of guys who write into those sights are angry at the world anyway; but what I couldnt believe was the level of sheer brainlessness.

Not TD5 related, but when I have a problem with mine, I fix it and get on enjoying it. No other cars I have ever owned have put such a smile on my dial. Worth every cent even with their problems - perceived or otherwise.:)

Every car my son has is "the best" until something goes wrong.
Then he tell the whole world how much of a POS it is...
Until its fixed... Then it's great again...
And the cycle continues...

My car is the best.
When something goes wrong it's still the best, just resting a while.
Then it's the best again.

havent been able to log onto that site yet....
I'm taking it to mean that no-one has had a problem with a landrover thats bad enough to warrant "bogged worked toyota passed by a stock landy" grade tanties.

Is it my perception that is skewed because i have a defer TD5 but the vast majority of TD5's that make the POS list are Discos.
Are the defender drivers more accepting of LR's unique quirks?
Or do Disco drivers think they are a better class of citizen; Disco drivers can't hear the pending mechanical fault over their sound deadening; Disco drivers are too tight to perform preventative maintenance thus some poor sod gets years of neglect as a second owner (much loved, little maintenance) disco?

Pfft. You're one of those peasant defender drivers, what would you know? :p
Kidding. Any Td5 owner is cool with me :D
I think lots of the issues are potentially as you say, Defender drivers probably know what they're getting into. People buy Discos as they have the luxury car type tag, probably just something to tow the kids polo ponies out to the winery or something. As such it's not a case of "Something I need to look after" it's "Something I pay the dirty commoners to do for me".
As such when something goes wrong they jump up and down and bitch and cry about being late for their wine tasting event when really if they knew how to either look after their car or even had an inkling about how it worked it would be something that they could repair themselves, or could show some mechanical sympathy towards so it doesn't crap itself.
Anyway must dash.
Late for the opera.
So long peasants!
