Melbourne idgits have a new game. They choose a 4wd with the winch solonoids mounted on the bullbar, unspool the winch and hook it over the roof on to the towpack, then short out the pins in winch control plug.
Apparently it makes a bit of a mess...:o

Reportedly a 12000lb winch bends a hilux chassis.

"Transformers, robots in disguise" - sorry, couldn't resist.

I know this has been around for a while...

Back home fishermen used to target each other.

My dad saw the result of a landcfuiser ute where the hook had been taken over the roof, under the car and the wire passed through the hook.

As you said it makes a mess.

I have a circuit breaker fitted into the seat box just above the passenger's floor to switch the power cable and have placed under the bonnet, a remote control radio receiver in place of the wired hand control.

Mine has an isolator under the bonnet.
Makes it annoying to get to if I want to turn the winch on, but hey.
I don't get stuck ;) :p

What annoys me is that these so called idiots think up this stuff!! Who comes up with throwing the winch cable over the roof, hooking it up and then paying it in???? Got me thinking tho... Rollers on the roof rack... Ya could have fun with the car parked behind!!!!! :p

Unfortunately this one sounds like it was dreamed up someone who knows something about electric recovery winches and their controls, like a 4wd owner with their own winch.:(

That story has been going around for nearly 20 years. I first heard it when I had my second classic (fitted with a winch) back in about '94-'95.

I've never seen any photographic evidence.

No, and neither have the Mythbusters. It has been suggested as a story that they could run, but do date I have not seen it tested.

As said - heard lots of "a mate of a mate knew a bloke who heard it happened"

But never seen any proof.

In addition to the break up of ninja mikes RRC, we can have a "Cut the hilux in half" day :p
