I thought the 2013 defender was the 2.4 model, but the LR dealer sites in Aus. all seem to be advertising the 2.2 engine , even though now they advertise the new colours, [ Baltic blue, etc] . Just curious, surely the dealers would update their websites, you would think. Bob

Bob, you're arse-about, the 2.4 was superceded by the 2.2, so yes the current model has the 2.2 litre engine

Thanks ,mate, I have a lot to learn. I just found it hard to understand why you would put a smaller output engine in a vehicle that I think is crying out for a TDV6, or 5 cylinder transit engine, I think it is ridiculous that people have to "chip" their engines to get the power they need for their particular application, the vehicles should be sold with the capability supplied , Bob

You have a choice of different roof colours, as well, Bob

Do people really need more power, or do they do it because they can?
We went away over Easter with two adults & two teenagers in the 2.2 D90 with the camper trailer on the back, & at no time did I wish I had "more power".
It did everything I asked of it with still more in reserve.:burnrubber:

There are the others like me that would like to have a long life and reliable engine like the 3.9 Isuzu

Or at least an engine of a suitable capacity that means you dont have to ring its neck when you want to over take or tow.

It does look very nice, if not a bit more bling than usual on the inside.
Needs 2 more doors though ;)

Funny you should say that, I have to ring the neck of my Isuzu to overtake, hell if the overtaking lane is on a hill or there is a stiff headwind, game over before it starts, no choice but to keep left. Any of those 200tdi and later Defenders that "needs its neck rung" easily pull away from me on anything resembling an incline.
A 2.2 litre engined Defender would feel positively sporty compared to a naturally aspirated diesel One Ten.
I'll drive a turboed 3.9D County one of these days...

I have a 2013 2.2 D90 (only got 2500km). I find it "zippy" when empty, overtakes quiet nicely. Not the brutal overtaking power of a comodoor or one of those 3.2L rangers.... but sufficient. What I did find however is when I threw a 2.5T load behind it all of a sudden it got thirsty and a bit slow on takeoff. Once it was up to 100 it was ok to hold it but getting there was a bit slow. I wouldn't mind a bit more balls.
When I say thirsty it went from 10.4L/100 to something like 15L/100!
But now i think of it the 07 3L ranger I had went from 9L/100 to 15ish/100 when towing less.... Ok maybe I should just be happy with that. na, i think MORE POWER! haha.

What, like an inline six turbodiesel of say four point two litres?

G'day bob10
One of the forum members has a 2013 metallic black(Barolo Black) 110 Defender 2.2ltr 6speed,was with him over the weekend at the Defender Day,he took it to the 65th at Melrose in SA,it is smooth, with elect front windows,air-con that works and it certainly does not lack power,he towed a No 5 trailer kitted out as a camper to SA no problems,if I could afford one I would have one,the metallic black looks so much more up-market than the white trades/govt vehicle it is not funny.
Cheers
PM me for owners details.

No nothing that neanderthal, just a 3ltr TD5 or TDV6 2.7 would do, not a putrid 2.2ltr transit motor - what are they thinking.

Have you actually driven one?:wasntme: I've done 20,000kms in my 2.2 "putrid transit motor" MY12 D90, with over a quarter of that towing a lightly loaded fully enclosed trailer on open highways in outback WA, and am still surprised by how well it goes:cool:. It has a very useful bottom and midrange power package coupled with a 6 speed manual gearbox that makes ringing it out a little futile. The top end is a little flat, but you don't need to go there as it does 110kph with the load easily, including a roof tent on the rack, and will go past 130kph easily for an overtaking manoeuvre. I came from a Nissan Patrol ute with a 6 cylinder 4.2lt Turbo Diesel, so was expecting to be missing some power, but nope - the little 2.2 goes blinking well:).

In a 90 i'd expect reasonable performance but in a 110 or 130 , i'd like to see how it copes after 200k+ .

I'm interested as well, I'm thinking about looking around for a used 110 in a couple of years time, can't afford one new, it would be the last vehicle I would ever own, don't need one with "issues ". The TD5 D2 is a great vehicle, but I think down the track there could be an issue with spares. Just my thoughts. Bob

You ought to be careful what you say JayBoRover as 100kph is tops when towing for ALL vehicles Australia wide ... even the NT I believe.
And doing 130 overtaking or not will probably get you a lost licence knowing the paranoi surrounding speed limits over here even if gettting past quicker is safer, they won't accept it.
Hapy motoring.

Careful how I drive is more important than what I say about how I drive;). You have "read" that I did 110kph with the trailer, but I didn't actually say that - only referred to the roof tent which is quite legal at 110kph. You also "assume" the 130kph was on a road that the Police care about, whereas it could easily refer to a closed road, track or private property.
I haven't had a ticket, or even a warning, in over 20 years of doing a lot of driving and riding - including some high performance cars and very high performance motorcycles:nazilock::wasntme:.

Thanks JayBoRover,
Hi have just bitten the bullet finally and bought a MY13 2.2TDCi 110 Wagon over here in WA, but had a few reservations as to the power capability after having the 3.0 litre Nissan TD Navara. So I found this blog usefull. I guess I can latter chip it but would prefer not to have to for longevity.

In early June we did a long weekend trip from Brisbane to Bundaberg and return in the aforementioned black 110 towing a 1.02t caravan, towed well at 100kph with no lack of power or drop in road speed on hills,OK so it was a middle aged Millard 13ft 6in unit and not the more modern overweight palace on wheels that is available now,but for a weekend away we didn't notice the lack of the plasma TV or the Captain's chairs, the stove worked well, the beds were comfortable,it had ample cupboard space for both food and clothes,so what else is required, and at only 1.02t it didn't suck fuel with the tow vehicle it dropped from 10ltrs per 100klms to 12ltrs per 100klms so all in all considering the heavy traffic we did OK.
