Hi all,
I'm currently considering making the move from 3L toyota hilux to Landrover 130 dual cab. Currently my hilux lacks a little power once loaded up for touring. I am curious if anyone has any issues with the power in the 130 once it has around an extra 400kg - 500kg making up for passengers and gear. Would be used as a tourer. I've got a mate with a 110 and he's pretty much sold me. I don't want to purchase a vehicle in hopes to keep it for the next 10-15 years then find that it lacks power.

I'm guessing a 2.8 naturally aspirated Hilux?

:D The Tdi Defender 130 even leaves these for dead so a Chipped Td5 will be about, err, twice as much torque and about the same fuel economy, without the black cloud following you up hills...:D

I'd say you have NOTHING to be concerned about, load 'er up and wave by by to traffic jams in the rear view mirror...

A 2.4 puma 110 with the 6 speeder is a magnificently relaxed long distance tourer. I've recently managed to complete two trips fully loaded one with 2 people (11.7L/100km) the other 4 people including 5 days on Fraser Is (13.1L/100km). It tows my ski boat no worries. A great unit. The only thing that I'd be careful with is buying diesel from remote areas without upgraded fuel filtration/water separation. Also DO NOT EVER run one of these engines out of diesel. They aren't as forgiving as the old 3L engine. But much more rewarding.

I have a 99 Td5 130 which has no chip (yet), and have built a detachable camp body for it (projects & tutorials). It has a roo bar, roof rack, two spares, roof tent, awning, home made steel tray and rear body with alli skin which we then fill with camp ovens, eskys, food, water, tables, webber, chairs and all the usual clobber. Add to this a set of 285's which gear it up.... When laden it will cruse at 90 to 100kph with reasonable comfort. 110kph is working it hard, along with overtaking, but talk to the truckies on CH40 and they always back off when ya r passing. With a chip or the original 235's it would be good for 110 comfortably. Depends how fast you want to go really.... Thinking of sellin it too as I have this daft uncontrollable urge another 101! SWIMBO likes the idea too!! :D

Just traded a 3L Hilux on a 2.2 110. Goes like the clappers compared to the Lux. Go for it

I too came out of a 3L Hilux into a 110 2.2Puma. 110 has more torque, different power, the Hilux I had was definitely faster around town, but your concern is loading it for touring, the LR will definitely do the job better than the lux.

I'm happy I made the change.

Hey mate , i have a 99' TD5 130 dual cab setup for camping . Chipped and bigger intercooler, 285's tyres etc etc .
I run a aluminimum canopy loaded up with gear , roof top tent 100lt water and 180lt odd fuel fridge , family etc etc and it runs fine . I could sit on 110 km/h on the freeway but it just sounded nicer at 95-100 km/h.
Ive actual now fitted a disco transfer and does the 110 km/h like it would of done 95 . I get around 11.0 litre's per 100 km maybe a fraction better.
I got mine with 130K km's and now have 215K km's on the clock , but it's just starting to have some niggling problems and having to spend some money on it now.... not that it had an easy life though.

You looking to buy a brand new one? The Puma engine (Ford 2.2 Tdci engine) in the current ones goes like the clappers and it will easily tow its rated 3.5 ton.

The slightly older 2.4 ones are a touch rougher (very little though!), but very easy to have re-mapped and it will outrun, out tow and out work everything in its class. Throw in an aftermarket intercooler and it will amaze you.

As the guys mentioned, a 130 will not even know about 900kg on the back, so your camp load is quite a bit under the average touring 130!

Cheers,

Lou

I used to drive a naturally aspirated 3L Hilux for work in the NT. I was constantly amazed at how gutless that thing was. It was so bad that I would travel all around the NT with my foot flat on the floor (still not going every fast) and therefore using about 17L/100km. You will be amazed at what a loaded up 130 will do. Even a Tdi will be a revelation after owning the Hilux.

seems i may have misunderstood the original post too, if you meant the 3L engine it is 2.8 litres, the 5L engine is 3 litres.

doesn't really matter, both are still gutless though:D
