View Full Version : One or two 6HP-26 autos?

I read on a forum (Disco UK) where suggestions were made that there are (in UK - Manual options and) 2 different 6 speed Autos available as ZF 6HP-26 units for the D3.

The Standard 6 speed and an 'adaptive' 6 speed .. is this true or myth.?

If there are two differing gearboxes (6 speed Autos) what is the serial No or Model number that differentiates between the models please ?
Thanks
Steve

There used to be a manual option for D3s in Australia. As far as I know all auto D3s have the same transmission.

Not just a change or setting on the software is it?

In Australia,
Manuals were available until end of 08MY.
All autos in the D3 are the same. (Maybe different in the UK as there were commercials that we never received & there "may" have been a cheaper alternative!)
Camel Landy may know a little different.

The D4 has 2 different autos tho' one for the 2.7L & one for the 3.0L

Automatics in Discovery 3/4 in Australia:
D3 (all): ZF 6HP26
D4 5L and 2.7L: ZF 6HP26
D4 3L (up to MY12): ZF 6HP28
D4 3L (MY13 on): ZF 8HP28
All are adaptive.

Happy to be corrected, but thought a summary would be better.

Cheers,
Rob

MY12 also had the ZF 6HP28 (Mine has).

I thought the MY13 had the ZF 8HP28.

D3 (all): ZF 6HP26
D4 2.7L: ZF 6HP26
D4 3L (up to MY12) and 5L: ZF 6HP28
D4 3L (MY13 on): ZF 8HP28
All above are adaptive.

I just looked up the sales booklet for the D4 and noticed that the 5L have the 6HP28 auto - so updated the summary.

D3 V8s also have the ZF 6HP28.

I'm pretty sure my 2005 would have the 26

perhaps the last of the D3's may have an option for the 28?

AFAIK, all the info posted sounds about right (though I don't know off-hand the model numbers).

i.e. The D3 has a 6spd manual and only the one 6spd auto. The D4 started off with a 6sp and moved to an 8spd.

All autos are adaptive & the behaviour can be adjusted with software.

Hi.

Has anybody come acros a transplant? Replacing a 6hp26 with a 6hp28 or with a 8hp28.

What needs to be changed as they are the same sizes externally.

Would be interesting if this could be done.

Not sure transmissions are freely interchangeable in these days of electronic interface, even a matching trans from another car simply won't work.

Wasnt there something about there being 2 different pans on the auto on the D3?

I think there's 3:
1) Original plastic pan with integral filter;
2) Aftermarket shallow steel pan without drain plug with separate filter; and
3) Aftermarket deep steel pan with drain plug with separate filter.
