Ok, so last week the old dryer finally clapped itself
Purchased a new one :D

Amazing how much we use ours,, I certainly miss my old house with the ducted floor heating - best drying tool ever ;)

So, now as I sit here out in my back patio thingy having a fag, I'm looking at the old dryer wonder what my options are.
I've thought of pulling out the tub, maybe painting it and useing it as a pot plant. The steel side etc, I thought maybe I could fashion up some trays to sit things in out in the shed. Then just ditch the motor and left overs out in the bin,, although the motor does actually still work, but I'm unsure if I could utilize it,, might end up with curly hair

What do others do when they have stuff like this to be rid of. Any good suggestions/ideas in the home handyman stakes??

depending on how its been made the barrels make excelent wood fire pit liners.

Laid on their back or with the right kind of creepers standing normally they make "interesting" vine starters.

x2

My cousin made one from a washing machine barrel and a range rover rim on the bottom. It made a fantastic fire drum! All the holes create a big draft so it burns really well.

if the motor still works....and it just gets hot without the drum turning.....
chances are it only needs a new fan belt.........and itll keep working......

A couple of blokes on another forum I frequent have used motors out of these to power belt grinders.

X2 or if turns and no heat would most likely be the element.

Dryers are the simplest of things to fix.
Most of the time it is either the belt that breaks or the element burns out.

You could rig up the motor to turn a little wood lathe.
That's always fun, and makes a nice mess in the shed.

Some good ideas guys, thanks. The unit itself is a F&P, and the motor actually seems to stall. It can only take a very small load

Vern,, some would say I could come close to being called a hoarder :D,, but I'm not ;) just as well I'm not on the farm anymore,, I'd come very close then.

I did wonder about making a small lathe, but I'm not electrically minded at all,, I guess it wouldn't be hard to do up a frame etc to mount it all in, then I could maybe find a sparky to wire it up. I'll have to think about that one.
If anyone's got any links to home made lathes, that could be handy.

If the F&P dryer motor is like their washing machine motors, it'll be a direct drive brushless motor run by complicated electronics that have the habit of going foo. Apparently they make good wind generators as their shaft speed is so slow. If you do nothing else break the dryer down to its component metals and make a buck or two at a metal recycling centre.

If it's stalling it might just be the run capacitor on the motor, cheap fix if it is.
