Checked the engine oil on my Defender Puma and found that the bottom of the dipstick which shows the min/max marks is missing with the result that I can't see the oil level. Is it possible it could have broken off and fallen down into the sump. If this has occurred what damage could it do and any ideas on how to remove it.

If this is a new car, o still has warranty left on it, take it to the dealer and they should fix it,, ie; pull off the sump, find the missing bit and then replace with a new one.
Otherwise, it would be best if you got into it yourself and retrieved it, or a mechanic if you need to. But I wouldn't want it moving about in the bottom of my engine.

Have checked that it's not a faulty dipstick? Ie the high and low marks are not
Marked on it, or has it broken off? There is really no chance of a broken end doing damage as the sump plug area is magnetized and the oil pick up has a gauze filter on it.

Errrrr I couldn't say 100%but I have a feeling the puma dipstick from memory doesn't have a high low it has like and indent or the likes....
if you ask someone nicely perhaps they will pull theirs out and take a photo for you.
I cant with mine at the moment

Just had a look at my 2.2. The dipstick "cable" has an aluminium alloy section swaged on the very end. It is calibrated with a notched out section which is cross hatched.
Being aluminium it not magnetic.
I would not be happy till I removed the lost bit from inside the motor
