You put 2 more cigarette sockets in the ash tray...
That only leaves the center console for butts and coins now. :D

Even with the rubber/plastic covers and fuses, the sockets turned up like that are too much of a short hazard for me.

Smoking is not good for your health.!!!
However I will challenge you to me smoking non stop for 3 hours in an enclosed shed, and you sitting inside your LandRover with the engine running for 3 hours in an enclosed shed.
Lets see what is a disgusting habit and who lives the longest.

I am not being a smart A'', but just saying people in general have a warped view of what is right and wrong without any logic or uncommon sense, and yet so quick to say what is disgusting when they cause more damage to everyones health.

All respect...

Whats going to short, maybe if I roll the car and a coin flys out of my pocket into the socket that I forgot to put the cover on!!
I can see your point but a blown fuse would be the least of my worrys

Finding my loose change would be far more important ;)

Smoking is a disgusting habit, a habit that some cannot break due to lack of willpower (from an ex smoker ;) )

On this whole install cig sockets thing shouldn't we be all installing USB sockets? The cig plug is there because most vehicles have them and you can buy 12V accessories to plug into them but with nearly all portable devices being USB powered I thought it would make more sense to install USB sockets as they are really more practical unless you smoke and then they don't really work that well at all.

It's much cheaper to install Cig lighter sockets and then plug USB adapters into them.
Also much easier to swap out a failed/broken USB socket when it's in a ciggy adapter.
USB sockets are too easy to break in a car and too much stuff still uses a ciggy plug.

Nice work Ned.

Socket on the right is a double USB charger.

What the
Don't be confused mate.
All I am saying is that you,we,me cause more toxins that damage peoples health, where other things we might deem disgusting are not anywhere near the pollution we create from other means.

Do you have the new florescent light bulbs that leak murcuray gas throughout your house?

Do you spray your lawn with weed killer that is toxic and ends back in the water system when it rains?

Do you support radioactive fluoride that is put in your water supply?

Its all a conspiracy and just to the same extent as anyone saying smoking is disgusting while they damage themselves and other people from many other practices.

I polish my Defender every 2 weeks and my wife says it is a disgusting habit. Lack of will power on my part but its smoother than my ex LandCruiser. :p

Trollololol?

Is this so? You obviously do not know me mate. I am not a loser who can not handle facts and then post a pile of letters that mean nothing.

I support what everyone has posted, especially on the smoking and how it is a bad habit.
I support what has been done to provide other uses for these components put in place for a smoker.

All I did was challenge there actions for doing so and I AM VERY VERY HAPPY from the responses.!!!

Thats what makes some of us real people because we are not scared to say our mind. Some of you are scared what others will think and at the same time want to feel smart by posting meaningless letters. Typical........

Water run off from Weed'n'feed style herbicides is probably the least hazardous part of the equation. You need to research how the active constituent bio degrades before you use run-off as an argument killer.

Nice one Ned. That's looks like a tidy job and a good use of some pretty dead space. I might try that because I hate my current charger cable rattling around the gear stick.

What are the two disc things? I know what they're for but where from / what are they made of? And what did you mount the sockets in, the plastic plate looks a little like a Tupperware lid, is it?

Some of us neanderthals actually smoke because we enjoy it, same with choice of vehicle. Some people like Jeeps, some Rovers and some Asian brands. Your choice, and having a fag is one of the few things that I enjoy and can still do. My 2 bobs worth.

Step away from the crack pipe and the conspiracy theories and try and find some objective and factual information...

Hi Ian.
The discs are plastic with double sided adhesive, they usually come with multi-function phone mount kits.
They stick to the dash, and then you can stick the base plate onto them.
Available from places like Super Crap.
As for the rest of this thread.... :whistling:

Back on topic-

The lid is actually a bit of plastic, I cut the bottom off the original ashtray and glued the plastic inside then mounted the sockets, one is a normal cig socket the other a double USB, I didn't like cables flapping about as well and as the stereo is a fold out touchscreen every now and then the gps cable would get dragged into the stereo when it folded if i wasn't careful.

The discs are from Dick Smiths to enable a GPS (or anything else with a suction cup) to stick to the Dash, roundabout $10 for a 2 pack and hold things a lot better especially when the screen gets hot in the summer. These discs sometimes come with a new gps and use 3m adhesive pads to stick to the dash, also can be removed without any damage.

I like it , puting exta points up there is simple ,and practicle ,I have an older Defender were the cigar point is to close to 5 gear position , so if I use phone charger , sat. nav.they run very closeto the leads , well done , cheers jimr1 :)..

Cool, I'm now sold on this. The only reason to keep the ashtray was that it held the sat nav when it (inevitably) dropped off the window. :D

OMG - I said ashtray!!

BTW. The wireing for the sockets. Did you just run new cables down the back and into the fuse box below to a new fuse? or did you take it off of an existing line back there?

Cheers,

Ian.

Th original socket uses a 20amp fuse so I thought taking the feed from the original socket would be OK, I guessed it could handle anything I wanted to plug in, a GPS or charging the phone shouldn't draw too much, a lot easier as I had no need for a permanent live anyway. The main reason was the ashtray was useless and I didn't want cables trailing down around the gearstick (plus the wife says I've OCD about cables everywhere ;) )
