View Full Version : Rover Diff Cover Bolt Size?

Hello,
I pulled my diff to do some work on it. It was then I realized I didn't order any Nyloc nuts for the diff cover. I then looked in the parts manual and found that I needed NY606041L x 10 Pcs. I then found a set of propshaft nuts/bolts that had the same part number on it (the nuts anyways).

So, I tried one of the "new" nuts on the studs and it didn't seem right. Just didn't tighten down until it hit the teflon/plastic bit. So, I tried one of the "old" nuts on the new bolts and it seemed to thread on ok, but almost had that feeling you get when trying a nut that has an almost similar, but not exact thread.

Paddcoks has: NY606041L - Nut 3/8 Unf Nyloc

Can anyone please offer some help on this and let me know what I actually need?

Im all but certain 3/8 UNF is your man - should be 7/16" across the flats of the nut.

I do remember pranging several of the studs on the rear diff of my old disco in the Kimberley on the Mitchel Plateau road a few years ago - Then ringing 5 or so different places to find the right studs and waiting for them to be sent to Kunnas...

Anyways, if you are worried take an old nut to your friendly bolt guy.
3/8UNF is very different to M10 1.0 or 1.5 on a pitch gauge and he will sort you out in a flash

Thanks mate!

Unfortunately, the nearest bolt guy is a couple of hours away..... :-(.

Is the UNF the type of thing I should be able to get at a small hardware store or is that a special nut?

I'm thinking that the guys who put together the prop nut/bolt set may have just gone for a metric option or something.

I just found online that "early" Rover cases are 3/8" BSF. Is it tru/possible that my studs are this size?

An easy to check whether you have UNF or BSF, is to get a 3/8"UNF bolt and see if your old/used diff nuts will screw on to it with ease, if they don't you have BSF threads, cheers Dennis:angel:

I had already tried that. The old nut (which came off the Rover Diff) screwed easily onto a UNF bolt that came with the prop bolt/nut set that I was pilfering for the Diff.

However, when I tried to put the nut onto the diff housing, it only when on about 1.5 turns and then got tight. I screwed it on about 2 turns and backed it off. The threads (not the nylon) were in quite a bad state when I then looked at it.

I've got another set of prop shaft bolts with the same nuts (other supplier), so I'll try these this afternoon.
